Low carb pancakes for Shrove Tuesday

Here’s the recipe I follow, but too dense for crepes, definitely American style (I sometimes have them as a breakfast treat), using a stick blender: http://diatribe.org/cottage-cheese-pancakes Half the ingredients (ideal for one person) using coconut flour gives the following using...

    Diet that works with 3c

I use Creon and found this helped greatly. I also successfully experimented with fermented foods based on my dietitian’s advice (because the strong antibiotics prescribed in hospital probably wiped much of my body’s natural biome and the pancreatitis badly damaged my stomach and intestines). I...

    CGMs and constantly checking them

In my case, I used to check 25-30 times a day because 1) I could 2) am a control freak 3) my levels are quite erratic However, that was in the early days of a separate reader before bluetooth to my phone, and particularly the high/low alarms. So now, I tend to look at the reading when I wake/go...

Has anyone found a reliable strategy with beer?

Those guys (Endocrinologists with T1) seem crazy, but they show it’s possible to eat all sorts of things… e.g. not one, but three doughnuts on one episode! (Sorry, but although fascinating, I instinctively felt ill )

    Breakfast ideas?

@Grahamcoad scrambled egg suggestion was basically my lunch today, but I do occasionally have this for breakfast as it’s quick and tasty. Nothing as grand as smoked salmon: I simply fry some onion with any “odds and ends” from the fridge for a few minutes and then break the eggs straight into...

    Breakfast ideas?

If you want to eat bread, you could make your own… a bit of a faff, but I think this would meet your dietary needs and I quite like it (more for lunch) https://www.dietdoctor.com/recipes/the-keto-bread My go-to breakfast is a “porridge” made with chia and linseeds (I grind them in a batch), add...

Need help with exercise and increased risk of hypo

@mully10 Hi, I have a different type of diabetes, but I inject and use a Libre. The approach I take with cardio is to reduce my meal-time insulin in advance of exercise (I can’t advise you by how much, but it will be trial and error to an extent) and to sip orange juice during exercise to keep...

    Car hire

I’ve had similar experience (no problems) renting cars in U.K., Europe and USA. I haven’t had diabetes as long, but have had epilepsy which has the same 3 year licence renewal/restrictions.

Please help me find a cold breakfast

I often mix half a pot of cottage cheese (125g) with ground seeds (chia and linseed) and then top with whatever nuts and seeds I have e.g. walnuts, sunflower, pumpkin, etc. Minimal effort (if you’ve previously ground the seeds.) Approx 5g carbs, but 20g protein.

Can Libre2 readings "drift" out the longer you wear it?

Personally, I only found it becomes unreliable on days 13 or 14 if the sensor has started to work loose I.e. visibly becomes detached from my arm. Day 1 reading are always suspect, despite me (usually) inserting a new sensor up to 24 hours before activation. (I use Bubble plus Glucosedirect...

    Type 1 Creon Consumption

Great answer from @plantae My medical condition is similar and I was prescribed Creon from the outset. The only thing I’d add, is that I notice within 24 hours when I’ve not taken Creon or not taken enough pills for the meal, typically a higher fat meal… There’s an unpleasant thing called...

Any Type 3C people out there?

I was in a similar situation, although 8 years ago. I think the first year was the worst: not just hospital, but the huge learning curve and change in life. So, first well done for all you’ve gone through and achieved so far. I was on slow release insulin for the first year; I think it’s...

    Travelling with insulin

Not “charging” a frio is interesting. I’ve not heard this and the problem would be travelling anywhere hot. Travelling from U.K. would be ok, but when preparing to return, we’d need to spend (several) days letting the frio dry out in advance of the flight.

Free book “Diabetes sucks and how you can handle it” - help for stress/mental health

I’ve noticed we can currently download a free pdf version of this book from the author (Mark Heyman) at https://www.thediabetespsychologist.com/ I’m half way through the book and can recommend it. The author is a psychologist with T1D who specialises in helping people with T1D. He stresses the...

    Libre replacement

I wait 24 hours before starting a sensor. However (and I’ve been using Libre for about 4 years), I now leave a gap of about 2 or 3 days between sensors when I only use my “old” Contour Next One i.e. finger pricks. I would get anxious without the 24 hour access to Libre (and I use a Bubble so...

What is the no 1 thing that frustrates you about living with type 1 diabetes?

I hate having to eat when I don’t want to (not hungry), particularly any form of glucose/sugar which I’ve learnt to automatically avoid/perhaps detest. The feeling is worse at night, when I’m tired and only want to go to sleep, but it’s “not safe” to do so because my BG is too low. It doesn’t...

Have you heard of diabetic shoes?

No idea about the shoes, although since WFH I live in my fake Birkenstock sandals and am sure my feet benefit. When I do wear socks, I echo @jaywak’s recommendation for bamboo - amazingly comfortable and good for the environment (allegedly) - TKMAXX often have a good offer.

Type 1 Is anyone else completely intolerant to sun and heat? Is it a diabetic thing?

Personally I love the sunshine and fortunately I’m on holiday this week and able to make the most of it while it lasts. It does affect me. So I need to lower my basal: even so I’m much more likely to hypo when out walking - must be using my available glucose faster than normal. I’ve been sat...

Needle clippers - anyone use them and if so for what?

I used one on lancets for about 2 weeks before it broke! Probably was intended for (thinner) needles. It was a faff, so I didn’t replace it!
