    Thanks for that. I read the useful explanation. Usually I don't eat anything after dinner which is around 7pm. I am going to try eating the small snack suggested and see if that makes a difference.

    Could anyone give me a reason why my sugar should be high first thing in the morning before breakfast (e.g. 10.8 this morning)? It quite often seems to be the case. Am taking metformin twice per day with breakfast and dinner so the reading is before the tablet.

    Thanks for the support. I don't know how I managed to get the HBA1C down so much - it might be that I have cut down on chocolate and sweets (my weakness). I will take heart from the comments and make a real effort.

    I was diagnosed with type 2 about 3 years ago and have 'progressed' from control by diet (or lack of it) to maximum dose of metformin. I worry that I am not taking my condition seriously enough and keep reading about "lifestyle" changes necessary to live with the problem. I am only ever sure...
