    Medical Exemption - Prescriptions Charge

I just looked at my card, and it expired in 2022! Oops. ASDA never ask for it, but I had better get a new one...

    Flying with t1 diabetes

The only time I have ever needed a GP letter was to enter Saudi Arabia, where they are unhappy about people bringing in any kind of drugs or medication.

how long before a meal do you bolus

I travel with work and eat out at restaurants frequently. I tend not to bolus (Novorapid) until I can see the food!

    Freestlye Libre 2

I find it very helpful. No serious hypos since wearing it, and I now have it on prescription. Not 100% reliable - of the last seven sensors, two have failed and had to be replaced. Not knocked any off yet or lost any in the shower/bath.

    Travel Abroad Help!

Pre-Covid I used to travel in Europe for work 2 or 3 times a month, usually Germany, Holland, Belgium and France. I have a letter in my medical kit bag, but nobody has EVER asked to see it. Airport security staff are pretty familiar with diabetes medication and insulin pens IME. (I have only...

    OneTouch Verio test strips

I get them on prescription, but the supply seems to have dried up. Probably a Brexit benefit.

    OneTouch Verio test strips

Anyone else having trouble getting hold of these in the UK? The pharmacy has been unable to get any for the last two weeks. I even tried calling OneTouch's help line, but it's a useless call centre in India...

Coronavirus - How at risk am I?

I saw my GP last week and asked her. I am 58 and type 1. She said I was not in an "at risk" group because my immune system seems to work just fine. To be on the safe side I have been stockpiling red wine.

    Working and Diabetes (Sugar Levels)

Oh, and for God's sake don't eat them yourself. I was forced to eat a Macdonalds a few years ago at Charles de Gaulle airport because everything else was closed. Did what I thought was a suitable injection, but 30 minutes later was over 15. Maccy D's fill the food with sugar because it make...

    Working and Diabetes (Sugar Levels)

I'm sure it's stress. Causes your body to raise sugar levels. Chill. It's a burger. Customer gets burger 30 seconds later, no big deal. Your employer needs to make allowances for your "disability" so don't stress about that either!

    Lantus Shortage

I just picked up 15 cartridges today, doesn't seem to be a problem here.

    A normal life

Equally the opposite of "beer highs" is "wine lows." I can have a few (LOL) glasses of red wine, test just before bed and it's 3.0. OMG, panic, eat stuff ... and I wake up and it's 15. :( If I just ignore it and go to bed, I'll wake up at 5.something. You live and learn.

    A normal life

Been there! Learned now not to sweat over "beer highs." A few hours at >10 isn't going to kill you; wait for the morning and see where you are. I routinely go to bed with BG >10 because of drinking, but my HbA1c is 38. So the problem is just in my mind. :)

    Travelling with Type 1 Diabetes

I have never seen any problems with cabin pressure. Liquids that are not prescribed medicines will be subject to the same rules as any other liquids. I always carry fruit pastilles - they are very fast-acting and you can take them anywhere.

Travelling Abroad For The First Time Since Diagnosis

I travel all over the world pretty frequently - 16 trips so far this year including Turkey, USA and South Korea. I carry all my paraphernalia in my hand luggage including pens, insulin cartridges, needles, meter and various tablets. Never had any trouble. Very occasionally they open the bag...

Public Health England is reviewing the dietary advice conveyed in the "eatwell plate" -

Amazingly my practice nurse suggested I reduce my carb intake at my last diabetic review. Have cut down to about 50g of carb per day, plus increased time on the excercise bike. Result? I have lost 3 kg in a month and my insulin intake has halved.

    Testing Strips

I have had this a couple of times, generally when changing prescription to a new strip. It has always turned out to be a combination of the receptionist and the NHS "computer says no" guidelines rather than a decision by an actual doctor. I have found writing to the Practice Manager always...
