    Simple Menus

There will be more suggestions from better cooks soon, but some simple suggestions to start would be: Breakfast: 2 boiled eggs and black coffee/ tea Lunch: sausage and cabbage Dinner: chicken breast and broccoli OR Breakfast: scrambled eggs and bacon Lunch: salmon and cauliflower Dinner: beef...

Half a can green labelling ??

I hate the traffic lights: they are supposed to clarify, but I think it's deliberate obfuscation in many cases. What we want and what we need is clear data per 100g.

I need 3000 calories per day

First, like the others mentioned above, I think it's worth getting checked for T1 if possible. After that, if you're just T2 and struggling to keep your weight up, then I'd simply go heavy on the bacon, butter, eggs and cheese. You'll soon go over 3000 calories a day like that. Walnuts, almonds...

Successful test result post carb meal or not ?

Your overall numbers don't look too bad, especially for such a carb heavy meal, but it's still a pretty hefty spike. My concern would be that maybe right now your diabetes isn't very advanced, and you can handle this very carby meal (more or less), but if you keep on doing it, your insulin...

    Ridges on toenails

I have them, and believe they may be related to my heart issues as well as diabetes. I forgot where I read that, but I think there was some correlation. In my case, you can hide the lines by putting a little vaseline on the toenail; obviously this wont help with any underlying issue, but if...

    Hello - I'm BigKit and I'm prediabetic

I'd like to second VashtiB on this one- this is a golden chance. Drop the carbs, swap your daily coke for a coke zero, and you may well be able to stave off full-blown diabetes. Even in the event that you can't, following the same programme will help you lose weight and mitigate metabolic issues...

    Cateracts!

Just as an aside in case it helps anyone, my diabetic dad (77 years old) just had his cataracts done; it was pretty straightforward, he didn't find it unpleasant, and he's doing fine now. Hopefully everyone else getting it done has a similar experience!

A history of bad eating habits and misdiagnosis - part3

Hi Olivv, my peripheral neuropathy was made much worse by hyperlipidemia- I had too much fat serum in my blood and very high triglycerides. I don't know if this is relevant to your case, but it might be worth investigating. I reduced my carbohydrate and alcohol content greatly, and it largely...

    Porridge v readybrek

It's ok: have some bacon and eggs instead. If you don't have time, make boiled eggs at the weekend and keep them in the fridge. 2 boiled eggs and a black coffee is as good as anything. Cold sausages, cheese and ham: all very good.

Please help me find a cold breakfast

Boiled eggs are cheap, easy and nutritious. You can boil up a dozen and then keep them in the fridge for the week ahead.

    alcohol.

Most of the pure spirits are quite good as far as blood sugar goes: vodka, gin, whisky: and then if you want a mixer, get a sugar free or diet drink to go with it. Whisky and soda is probably a good replacement for beer. White rum and coke zero should be a good holiday drink. Gin and tonic would...

Green tea - the good, bad and plain ugly

Loose leaf green tea is best but it can be a bit finicky: I like measuring the leaves and putting the water in a jug to get the temperature right etc, but I totally see why it's off-putting to many. If you get the tea called gunpowder tea, it's a lot more forgiving of overly hot water because...

Snacks...have you found any brill snacks you can buy?

4.7 per 24g is a little bit high though- if you work out how much that is per 100g, it won't be ideal for low-carb. That said, if you're not eating much, it's a really nice snack, and better than a lot of the other stuff you could get. I like that kind of jerky myself, but I'm just saying it's...

    My problem with weightloss

I'm a terrible over-eater, but when I manage to stay off the carbs, and keep my portions sensible, my appetite does drop. I like to stave off hunger with fancy Chinese teas and coffee too: that helps with the 'treat' side of the equation.

What Glucose meter does everyone use?

Accucheck for me and my dad, Bayer for my GP.

    Cows milk

Agree with the people above; cream or full fat milk would be your best option, other than getting used to black.

    Newbie

You'll find it easier to keep off the carbs once you've been doing it a little while, and if you can keep to the lists above, it's very likely your numbers will get a lot better, and you'll start feeling a lot better. There's a big silver lining, and you starting with steak and salad sounds like...

    What's the difference?

Diabetes UK has an introductory page for T2 diets. They suggest a bowl of wholegrain cereal with milk for brekkie, and chickpea curry with brown rice for dinner. They also suggest the following, which I will quote in its entirety. Yes, whole fruit is good for everyone and if you have diabetes...

    Do i have diabetes?

We can't really diagnose, especially from these symptoms. Type 2 sounds unlikely at your weight and age, but I would strongly recommend you see a doctor. Look after yourself!
