Places should cater more for diabetics!

"Diabetic" foods/products are awful and in some cases worse for you than a normal version because they can be really high card and have loads of artificial sweeteners in that are really nasty in other ways too. Try and get onto a DAFNE course, that will help you understand how you can eat...

    Type 1 and exercise issues

Surely lowering your insulin dose is the same as running your sugars higher, or am I missing something??

    Zumba...

Just a quick note - I love Zumba classes too but they really hit my BG levels hard, so I always take some glucose tablets in with me, even if I eat beforehand, and have a snack in your bag for afterwards as well, just in case!

    A REAL Cure for Diabetes

If you have Type 1, and any kind of diabetes knowledge at all, you should know the only "cure" for your diabetes would be a functioning pancreas. Eating a restricted diet and cutting down your insulin isn't the same thing as curing your diabetes.

what is the best thing to have for breakfast

As long as I do the right amount of insulin, I eat whatever I want for breakfast - within reason! Usually have 1 slice of granary or wholemeal bread with low fat spread, but I've been known to have Coco Pops, Crunchy Nut and even Frosties for breakfast! I also found Belvita breakfast biscuits...

    Needing some encouragement..

Thanks all for your supportive words - I'm just having one of those days (weeks? months?) where it feels like everything is on top of me so needed to get it all off my chest, it's really good to know I'm not the only one who struggles with these problems. Yorksman, wow, your progress is an...

    Needing some encouragement..

Hi all I've been feeling really down and low for a few days now, all tied in with my diabetes, weight loss/gain, fitness etc, and I really just need some words of encouragement / wisdom please! I broke my ankle about 18 months ago, during my recovery I put on quite a bit of weight (about...

Help or advice for Dawn phenomenon

Hi Rob I was having real trouble with this as well, I found splitting my Glargine exactly in half (so 18 in the am and 18 in the pm) really helped. I also started eating my dinner much earlier - I was eating around 9pm at night, so I now try to eat by 7.30pm, to make sure my Novorapid is taken...

Doctors Orders - have a baby!

I've been T1 for about 16 years now, I'm 26, and I get asked about babies every time I see my doctor! She's recommended having a first baby around 30 would be a perfectly sensible age, which gives me a few years to really make sure my control is good (it's getting much better, after being shaky...

    DAFNE course

Quick question for everyone that's done a DAFNE course - how long did you have to wait to get on one? I've been on the waiting list for a year now, and just been sent a letter to say I can do the course in October 2013. A girl at work was diagnosed 6 weeks ago and is going on DAFNE (at the...

    Stopping smoking?!

Congratulations to everyone who has managed it!! And to those who haven't - keep trying. As long as you are making a conscious effort to quit/cut back, that's great! Every craving you don't give into, and every cigarette you don't smoke is an achievement. I gave up at the end of October 2012...

Can I eat snickers with diabetes?

I do love a Snickers, so I have them in the house and in my sports bags - usually reserved for when I am having a hypo (or have had a bad day at work!) That way I get to eat them every now and again, so I don't feel like I am depriving myself of my favourite chocolate bar, but I wouldn't eat...

    insulin passports

I was told by my Practice Nurse when I got mine that it's in case I am ever hospitalised or in an accident, so the health care providers have access to my insulin details in case I'm incapable of telling them. So it's got my insulin/diabetes details on, my GP and my next of kin on, as well as...

    Ready to quit pump use

I think there are certain criteria you have to meet, and your consultant or GP can put you forward to be considered for a pump to be funded for you. Otherwise you can pay privately to have one, but they are quite expensive (around £2000 for the pump itself and about £1500 a year for...

    Sharps Boxes

I still don't know how/where to take my full sharps boxes and I've been injecting for about 15 years now!! My GP surgery told me they won't accept them and I should take them to the hospital, I asked at the hospital and they said to take them to my local surgery.. Luckily my mother is a nurse...

Whats the most annoying thing people say about diabetes?

Gracek, I have to say I massively agree with Kimiwolf. I was diagnosed at the age of 10 - and it wasn't so much the "Not being able to stuff my face with sugar and chocolate" that I resented and used to go home and cry into a pillow over - it was being different. At a time in your life where...

Introduce Yourself: Answer Some Personal Questions

I've loved reading everyone's answers to these questions - I'm a bit of a lurker on here but am trying to get more involved, so here goes with mine too :) - What is your name? Phoebe - How old are you? 26 - Are you male or female? Female - Which country are you from? England (but half...

    Pets?

It's great hearing how many of you have dogs and cats together - I'd love to rescue a dog but my OH is worried the cats wouldn't appreciate it. I have 3 cats - I had 4 but my beautiful Penelope was hit by a car in November  Now I have Delilah and her sister Esmerelda, who are about 2...

    Advice needed for diabetic daughter

Have you tried sitting her down and just asking her to talk to you about how she feels? Maybe the fact that you and her diabetes team are having conversations about her "behind her back" might be making her feel a bit rebellious? I know it's so hard, but could you try to put less pressure on her...

Help? Just cant find the motivation to control my diabetes!

Re: Help? Just cant find the motivation to control my diabet I'm so glad to read that I'm not the only one struggling with this! After seeing so many posts where people talk about their amazing control and how low they keep their sugar levels, I felt like an absolute freak (more than my...
