Competing after 12yrs but unsure how to manage my pump

Well done @johnpol! I love the buzz on competition day, I have my next push-pull meet on in 5 weeks times. Hoping to get a 57.5kg bench at it (@55kg)!

    Managing exercise and insulin

I train and compete in powerlifting, which is a strength sport based around squat, bench and deadlift. My typical training week currently centres around 4 training days. Training takes 2.5 hours each time, and I start with my heavy worksets and then finish up with accessory work which can be...

    Personal Question

Yes, my period was 2 weeks late after being diagnosed with Type 1. If you lost weight before diagnosis, that could also be a reason why it's late.

    No more insulin?

Very interesting! Granted, I am only 6 months diagnosed and am honeymooning, part of my low insulin requirements come from powerlifting training 10 hours every week. I don't take any long acting insulin because it kept causing me to slide into hypos by lunchtime with no novorapid on board.

    Type 1 and weight training

Same here, squats, deadlifts and any sort of targeted back work leaves my blood glucose dropping afterwards. I am going through a really strong honeymoon period, so I don't take any basal at the moment, so I can't help with that end of things. It did take a while for my insulin needs to settle...

    Advice

Hi John, I got a few false hypos at 7s and 8s when I was first diagnosed. Apparently it's because your body gets used to the higher glucose levels and needs to readjust to what normal numbers are.

    Honeymooning and having hypos

I am honeymooning at the moment, and it turns out my background insulin was too high. The diabetes nurses recommended reducing it gradually and eventually we figured that I don't need any background at the moment. I count carbs and use Novorapid with my meals. If I were you, I would focus on...

Good app for counting carbs and food info

MyFitnessPal is great for tracking calories and carbs, they have a huge database of raw ingredients if you like to cook and for any processed food, there is usually an entry already for it.

    Endocrinologist - MODY ?

Personally with a morning fasting blood glucose of 18, I would be heading to an emergency room or looking for an extremely urgent appointment with a diabetes specialist. Please read up on the symptoms of a DKA, just in case those numbers get worse. Do you have access to a way to test ketones?

    My Sugr - estimated HbA1c

My estimated HbA1C from MySugr was accurate but I also input numbers from when my blood glucose is high.

Type 1: What are your HbA1c test results?

    First HbA1C since diagnosis - 46 or 6.3%

Early exposure to cows' milk and diabetes link

I've never been pregnant/ had gestational diabetes, but it took 4 years from me to progress from a diagnosis of LADA to needing insulin so don't assume that because it hasn't happened quickly, it's not autoimmune.

What am I dealing with here...

Your GP is an idiot. I'm honeymooning, tbf, but I am on a TDD of 6.5 units, averaging 220g carbs a day.

Type 1 Blood sugar testing- alternatives?

I check whenever my libre reads that I have a hypo or I don't quite feel right - which is around 5 times a week. I don't drive but I would have to finger prick if I did. Before the Libre, I would fingerprick around 6-12 times a day.

    I have a dream.

Eat a ridiculously large pizza followed by a family pack of crisps.

Type 1 Blood sugar testing- alternatives?

I wholeheartedly recommend the libre. My fingers are so much better now, and I feel more secure in knowing what way my blood glucose is trending.

Pump advice for starting at the gym tomorrow?

How did it go, Donna? I'll agree with both posters above, I need less insulin for cardio and more onboard for weights, but start slowly with the adjustments and monitor regularly.

    LADA vs. Type 1?

It's quite slow onset. My endo currently defines me as a Type 1 but was previously diagnosed with LADA, but I had positive GAD antibodies with a low HBA1C and fasting BG of 6-9mmol for 3 years before I was started on insulin

    Type 1 Eating out.

This is so helpful! I've been trying to figure out big meals out for the last month, and this would really work for me. I eat out way too much!
