    Ebay

My latest bargains are a pair of chocolate brown suede boots - brand new with tags - for 4.99, and a Geiger boiled wool jacket (with the £385 price tag still attached) for £4 including postage. Last week I bought a new Reiss skirt for £1.98. Got my eye on a few other things too.....I love ebay...

    Splenda easy carrot cake

I hate to think what the flour would do to MH's BS levels...... There's an excellent carrot cake recipe in the Low Carb Recipe thread! Ju

    Feeling cold all the time

You could ask your GP to check your thyroid function. People who suffer with underactive thyroids (hypothyroidism) can't regulate their own body temperature so they feel cold all the time. I think I'm right in saying that the same people will often be diabetics too. Ju

    Fruity Question....

In theory, the dried cranberries should be juicier now than they were to start with as they've absorbed the whisky. I'll get MH to try some as I don't like whisky. Ju

    Fruity Question....

Just what I wanted to hear - the whisky is 'good' for BS levels. So now, do I use them for a Christmas cake, or make something special for his 50th birthday next week? I've probably got enough to do both..... :D I guess it doesn't have to be just cranberries? I could use most dried fruits...

    Fruity Question....

....dried fruit to be exact. Well, sort of. Last year, before MH was diagnosed, I soaked some dried cranberries in Macallan. Quite a lot of Macallan. A year or so later the cranberries have absorbed most of the whisky. I think the cranberries are sweetened with sugar as opposed to sweeteners...

    Low Carb & Hair Loss

I was at the GPs last Thursday and, interestingly, he thinks I'm taking too much Levothyroxine. I'm on 100mg, but the GP thinks that my optimum dosage is probably about 85 to 90mg. But because the tablets go up in 25mg increments they have put me on 100g. I also have other symptoms of a...

Cravings (possibily a "ladies only" question!)

You could work out the equivalent in Splenda or Candarel and sweeteners like those, but they will affect the taste - they don't work very well with chocolate. I use TotalSweet, which is xylitol, I've tried Splenda and it's disgusting. Ju

    cake.......

Ann, surely the sugar in spirit alcohol is a polyol, so shouldn't affect your BS levels at all? http://www.diabetes.co.uk/alcohol-and-blood-sugar.html Oh...my bad.... Amaretto is a liqueur, not a distilled spirit. OK brandy in the coffee tomorrow night then! Ju

    can't do black coffee

A lot of poultry keepers will fatten the excess boys for the pot. The reason you eat hens is because they've come from egg producers once the producers have decided the hens are past their laying best - usually at only 72 weeks old - one laying season for pure breeds but possibly two for...

    Low Carb & Hair Loss

Since MH's diagnosis back in February, we have been on a low carb diet. Not ultra low carb, but maybe under 50g a day. MH eats more carbs than I do, I seem to have a lower tolerance, so I usually eat between 30 and 40g a day now, but I was eating under 20g to start with. I take vitamin...

    can't do black coffee

I actually did wonder that, Superchip, but chooks don't digest stuff the way we do. We had a cockerel who was very nasty and very noisy and we knew we were going to have to dispatch him. Now, we're a bit wussy in that department, so we decided to overdose him on sleeping tablets and diazepam...

    can't do black coffee

After the husband was dianosed I was sorting through our freezers looking for suppertime inspiration. I was horrified to realise that mostly what was in our two big freezers was carb orientated - breads, pastry of all kinds, some pies. So I then took a look through my storecupboards and larder...

    Breakfast Loaf x 3 Varieties

Hana, just leave it out. I put it in to lower the GI and also to help make the bread as filling as possible to sustain people until lunchtime. You may need to bake the loaf for a little longer as the mixture will be wetter without the coconut. Ju

I can't see why not. It might take a few minutes longer to thicken up though as there might be a wee bit extra water in the frozen berries. Ju

Wifey has asked for a LC lemon cake

You could use the lemon & blueberry version of the breakfast loaf. Omit the blueberries (and the seeds and wheatgerm if you want) then add more lemon zest and bake it in your springform tin! viewtopic.php?f=18&t=31113&hilit=breakfast+loaf Or use WJ's Stracciatella Cake on Sid's thread and just...

Good heart warming winter low carb food

We use steamed brocolli as a pasta/rice/spud substitute. We have it with chili, spaghetti sauce, casseroles, stews, curries (sounds odd but tastes really good) A few nights ago we had it with sausage casserole. Also, creamed celriac is a great accompaniment to a lot of the dishes WJ suggested...
