    Yes I certainly have high carb foods but only very ocassionally. As for potatoes, rice and bread I have these quite regularly but in much smaller quantities than previously.

    Test strips

    I think that is a common point of view. I must admit now that I know what makes me spike and since by T2 has come under control I rarely test. Nothing seems to bring me above an 8.

    how long does it take for metformin to start working?

    What I find easier to follow in terms of diet is to avoid food that have been highly processed or refined.

    diet v blurry vision

    Blurry vision is normal as your eyeballs get used to the normal glucose levels. Took me a few months but slowly returned to normal.

    so what diet is best?

    I got my Hb1Ac down from 69 to 42 and managed to lose 1.5 stone in 4 months by cutting back (not cutting out completely) on carbs and increasing exercise regime.

    Diagnosed 4 hours ago

    There is lots of stuff on the internet including forums such as this one. Read lots of posts and try and get the "big picture" rather than taking one persons view. What worked for me was reducing weight (look out for hidden carbs), increasing exercise based on a positive outlook.

    blurry vision

    I also had the blurry vision problem when I started bringing down by Bg. It has taken a few weeks for my eyesight to return to normal levels.

    Metformin question

    I've just (with approval from my GP) dropped my Metformin down to 3 x 500mg a day instead of 4. This is to try and reduce the slight gut pain and need to use the bathroom at inconvenient times!

    My own view on this is that it easy to become a little paranoid when newly diagnosed and look for reasons for any slight unwellness might be something to do with the diabetes.     Metformin prescribed.....1 week til Christmas :(

    Defintelty take the Metformin. Combined with weight loss and excercise it will really help with the other problems you are having. My doctor advised gradually increasing the dose over a week until you are taking the recommended amount.

    Beer !

    I drink and enjoy real ale in moderation (about 12 pints a week) and counter the additional carbs by reducing my intake of processed foods such as bread and breakfast cereals. It works for me as I am losing weight and my BS levels are no longer spiking.
