Type 1 Type 1 Weight Gain Issues

Yes, I take medication for my thyroid. It can take a while to wort out appropriate dosing, because hormone replacement, which is pretty much what thyroid meds are, has to start low and build up. Weight gain was not a symptom for me. My main symptom was feeling very, VERY cold at all times...

"What have you eaten" Parallel Chat

ASDA, and Sainsbury's definitely do full fat UHT. I tend to use 50/50 full fat and semi-skimmed. I just prefer it. I use the no boil method for yoghurt, in an Instant Pot. It works well for me. To be honest, my gut feel is costs are marginal, but it's just convenient to make 2ltr (or more)...

Type 2 Cortisol and Stress /Anger

To be honest, without knowing what those rises are, it is tricky to comment on your situation, but what I will say is that cortisol is an extremely important hormone, and, personally, I would not be keen to meddle with it, unless there was a screaming reason. Again, personally, I do find stress...

Type 1 Type 1 Weight Gain Issues

Hi Lauren, I'm not T1, but do have a wonky thyroid. In terms of your thyroid, weight gain is a common symptom something is amiss, in terms of the thyroid under-performing. Quite often the weight gain is accompanied by fatigue, low mood. The NHS list of potential symptoms show there are lost...

    Coma

I came back from SE Asia a couple of weeks ago now. Unless your climate differs a lot to ours, it will be very hot and in our case, humid overnight. One thing to be very careful of is managing your hydration. I'd suggest drinking more than you perhaps feel you need in the earlier part of the...

High carb day - a day in hospital

I wasn't attributing specific "blame" on the cigarettes, more relaying the consultant's view of the impact of cigarettes on vascular health, period. He reckoned smoking to be the most harmful folks to do to their health. I am eternally thankful I never felt tempted to try cigarettes, because I...

High carb day - a day in hospital

Honestly, the smoking is the biggie. My mother was a life-long smoker who eventually had lower limb circulatory issues. Her vascular Consultant told her to stay off the cigarettes, because each cigarette caused more micro-damage. She stopped, cold turkey. The patches suggested didn’t suit...

Nasty business @IanBish . Take it steady.

Improving diet and lifestyle and reducing hypos and hypers

I'm not T1, so won't say anything specific about your father's care, except to say, "Bravo!" to you for being so concerned and "walking the walk", not just talking the talk. In terms of Power of Attorney, it's a process that requires specific processes and tracks to be followed, with witnesses...

Intermittent fasting alongside LCHF. Mutual support, anyone?

@BarbaraG - have you had a look at food addiction at all? It is incredibly common, including in those pesky normies. I found this YouTube video interesting, enlightening and a tad unsettling, but also entertaining. Dr Jen Unwin, who is one of the presenters have written books about it. From...

    Lost bit too much weight

Personally, I really do balk at the concept of eating to satisfy a medication, although, I can only assume they are keen you avoid hypos (or too many of them). If your A1c is decent, but pre-meal scores tend to be higher than you'd like, I wonder of you are plain old eating enough. You could...

    Leg ulcers

Salemn, your question is a bit like asking how a cold starts. There might be some usual symptoms, but nothing is nailed on. My strong steer to you is if you have concerns, speak to a health care professional about it, sooner, rather than later. Don't wait and see what happens. It makes sense...

No control over blood glucose - hormones out of control?

A salivary test should really be run by an Endo as, in my personal experience, GPs have, at best, a limited understanding of individual hormones. Don’t waste your money on Amazon. I doubt any such result would be given much respect.

No control over blood glucose - hormones out of control?

Whilst it is tricky to control cortisol, it is possible to understand your position a bit better. The cheapo, preferred test used is a 24 hr urine collection, whereas a saliva test, collected at specific times over a 24 hour period can be helpful. It is sometimes used for those with thyroid...

    PPI’s and Diabetes (specifically lansoprazole)

If you read around on stopping these meds, it appears it really is best to taper off them, as the rebound effects can be a lot worse than the initial problem, meaning folks often end up back on them, often convinced they could never come off them.

    Medical Exemption - Prescriptions Charge

It has been know for T1s to be wrongly diagnosed, and are indeed T2. There have been several threads on the forum on this. The pedant in me also has to say there is a ginagerous chance that with a pancreas transplant (often done alongside a kidney) T 1 does indeed go away. In full disclosure...

    Diabetes has affected the retina.

Hi Lisa, I'm sorry you are going through the mill. In terms of treatment, I can't comment upon that, but in terms of "how bad it is", you should be able to get a bit of clarification on that from your GP. They recieve a slightly different letter to we do, after eye screening, if something is...

    Feeling cold since starting low-carb

Are you actively losing weight, CarbAddict? (Great name :) ). If so, your body is likely “saving you” from starvation. A little bit tongue in cheek there, but our bodies can trim back on non-vital services when losing weight. If your weight loss is very fast, you may need to eat a little more.

    PPI’s and Diabetes (specifically lansoprazole)

@Jordi77 - it's great you don't experience side effects from taking Lanzoprazole, but both the NHS and the Patient Information Leaflet which comes with every pack lists potential side effects.
