I'm from London - lived in Liverpool for 7 years, got diagnosed there and had an amazing diabetes team, moved to goole in Yorkshire at Christmas, small town, hospital has been stripped down to bare essential services and gp is rubbish! I love cooking from scratch and try hard to plan meals... My main problem is iv always had an emotional relationship with food, like when I feel down or very tired I just want to eat cake!

That's really good! I'm not a fan of dieticians to be honest - had bad experiences with all the ones I've seen in the past!

I am quite good with not having hypos or anything :) just stabilising my sugars which is the problem /:
I am quite active - I work for Primark at the weekend so on my feet alot, I am a beaver leader so I do quite abit of walking camps hikes - I've not too long come back from a campin trip to Switzerland :) and all the leaders are great with my diabetes :)

Plus looking to start my college gym :) go there do an hot or so and then complete assignments :) LOL :)

Marfmama - I know the feeling I have always had strong emotions and food - whenever I got down I was at the food - cake, biscuits etc... However slowly I h e found better things to do - like walk my dog or listen to an upbeat song :) there is always a better way :)
Because I'm quite active with the hikes and camps I can have cake or a biscuit there to boost my sugars from becoming Too low :)

When I had diabetic ketoacidosis 5 years ago I had a lovely nurses in alder hay hospital (which is where I was transferred too whilst on life support) I couldn't thank or appreciate the nurses so much :) I have never had good consultants or nurses! My diabetic ketoacidosis developed overnight - as soon as I was discharged my diabetes nurse came to see me at home and her and my consultant blamed me started yelling at me saying it was all my fault!

Now I don't really give a *beep* (sorry trying not to swear another one on my list of things to improve) haha! I have a Ben and jerrys ice cream in the freezer I'll have four teaspoonfuls when I feel like it or when I am really down :) however I'll make sure that's all I have :) hope that helps a little Marfmama - if you like add me On Facebook if you have it

Oh she'll be top of the list of people who think most dieticians know nothing about really having diabetes! But she has a genuine interest in it, rather than just reading from a textbook if that makes sense!

I've always been a grazer, it's something I'm trying to work on now because it isn't easy on MDI. I have to travel regularly with work which is when I tend to hypo, I'm just finishing a 2 week stint in a hotel eating restaurant food the whole time. I managed to escape with just 2 very mild hypos which isn't too bad. When I'm back at home it's much easier to control!

I live in Aberdeen. I went to school there but moved away for uni. I only moved back last year to start my new job

Awwh that's cool - I very rarely hypo tbh - I had low sugars mainly 3s in Switzerland and had to have many milk and sugar drinks before bed and also sugar I. My cereal whilst I was there - it was weird but good! The main leader (mark) always ensured I had party rings (biscuits) on me! Whereas my boyfriend kept an eye on my sugars whilst we were over there as well - also doing my injections for me when I felt too ill or Leo to do my night injections!

What does MDI stand for btw?

MDI is just Multiple Daily Injections. Since you were diagnosed younger did you never consider going on a pump?

I'm still in the honeymoon phase which is why I have the odd unexpected hypo, my pancreas likes to kick in occasionally still! I'm also extremely insulin sensitive, so a half unit drops my BG by 2.5 usually. So misjudging causes havoc sometimes!

I only take on average 9-12 units per day in total (including my background!), my cousins takes that and more in just one meal haha it sometimes feels like it's hardly worth the effort! I know it is necessary though :(

I thought that's what MDI stood for just checking haha!
And I have but my consultants and nurses where horrible - whenever I asked something they'd ignore it or say it was ridiculous - I've been On that many different programmes its unreal but they would never go with the pump - not sure why!
Yeah I have 11-14 units novorapid at breaka
14-16 at lunch and 16-18 at tea! Plus 44 of lantus at bedtime /: so you'd think my sugars were in control and stable especially with the amount of active activities I do /: but nope /:

I now see my gp who specialises In diabetes for my diabetes! He is alot nicer - still strict but not as harsh! He'll take other things into consideration like my camps and hikes. Rather than my consultant who just told me not to go in the camps as hikes as it was too dangerous!
So I will ask my gp when I see him on Wednesdays! It's like my old consultant wanted full blood tests off me every month whereas my gp doesn't he'll ask me to go for them when needed!

I have a lot of hypos, pretty much once a day, things like hoovering / scrubbing the bathroom can send me low, I'm a teacher and spend all day on my feet which can run me down, also have a three year old boy so lots of chasing after him! The worst was one evening I played squash for two hours, felt fine that night but paid for it the next day, just had hypo after hypo and felt awful! Iv recently started testing all the time and writing down what I'm eating to try and get myself straight!! I'm quite sensitive to insulin being 8 stone and not taking huge amounts .. I will have about 4 units before a meal, my sugars are bad and it frustrates me, in the same day I can have hypos and sugars of 18 - gets me down!!! I think my honeymoon period lasted a long time and so I was able to get away with being fairly relaxed, also I found it easy to be strict wih myself early on but as time went on it sunk in that this is for life and got harder to be so strict ha! I need support from outside as like I said team here is pants and also my partner is lovely but just doesn't get it and will buy chocolate for me when really I need tough love! I don't even like sweet stuff that much any more to be honest, I always feel really ill after it and its just not worth it! I also have a problem wih portion control because as a child I was always forced to clear my plate, so now I find it really hard to leave anything even if I am stuffed!!! Wow Iv really rambled on sorry!!!! How can I add you in Facebook ?

You're similar to me in size, that must be why we're on low doses!

Having a toddler will certainly keep you on your feet! I'm meant to work offshore but unfortunately my diagnosis has out that on hold for a while :( so I'm at a desk all day. I run most evenings though so I often don't need any insulin with dinner

Becky - I totally want a pump but it's obviously too early at the moment, and my consultant says ill only qualify if I'm considering getting pregnant. Which I'm not for quite a while!

Your consultant sounds awful. I see mine every 4 months at the moment. My GP knows nothing about diabetes so he would be useless lol but the consultant is good. A little patronising at times but he means well!
