advice needed!!!!

hi all just a bit of advice needed i have been diabetic for over a year now and tried al different medications which i cant tolerate after a year of trying

my GP has rerfered me to the hospitial i cant get an appointment for 6 weeks problem i have now is no doubt i need to go on insulin which i dnt mind that at all
i have been of my meds now for nearly 3 weeks and my sugar levels are now constanly in the 20s and sometimes my meter dosnt even give me a reading it just ssya "hi"
so im getting a little worried about waiting so long for my appointment as some of my sympthoms have come back from when i was first diaganoised

would you go to A&E and let then sort it out or would you just wait as i really dont know what to do

If I was not actually feeling ill right now I would try a day, possibly two without carbs and if that made no difference to my high levels I would then consider A&E.

If I was feeling ill then I would go straight away and explain the length of time before your appointment and that it is causing you to worry.

Sensible advice from @Squire Fulwood. Have a salad this evening, no bread, potatoes, rice or pasta, nothing sweet, then test after 2 hours, again at bedtime and immediately you wake up. See if there is a difference.

When a diabetic (in another forum) reported a number of 32, I cautiously asked whether a personal glucometer could really register so high a number? The almost unanimous reply from several posters was YES - but that this value was just about the limit.

So Cath, if you get the reading HI again, I wouldn't hesitate to go to the A&E to try to get them to sort this out - and I definitely think that six weeks is way to long to wait.

I think a 6 week wait for what is essentially an emergency is not very good............

I would go to the hospital if your numbers don't fall naturally as long term highs, especially as long a 6 weeks will no doubt cause some damage...

thanks for your reply yes i think 6 weeks with them sort of levels is not good im really stuck as my GP cant do anything else for me
my morning levels are in the 15s which they have never been

I wouldn't feel bad at all turning up at A & E with numbers like that and no way of getting them down...........

obviously you could limit your carbs etc but this isn't a realistic solution for a period of 6 weeks.......

obviously you could limit your carbs etc but this isn't a realistic solution for a period of 6 weeks.......

I and many others think that lowering drastically carbs is more than manageable, however, I would be questioning LADA or type 1 rather than type 2. I would go to A&E although im not sure what they will do as in the case of another member recently

Just go to A&E then but tell them you believe you might be type 1 - it should get them moving faster and get you the help you need

how do you know that your a type 1 rather than a type 2 sorry if thats a daft question but i havent really been told much

you would be having hi blood suagrs regularly, peeing like a racehorse and feeling unwell normally. I think actually you could be late or slow onset type 1.

You can be given some extra tests to determin if you are t1 and also would need to go on insulin quite quickly, everyone on insulin isnt type 1 though.

that sounds like me all over i was on metformin for a while with really good numbers bt after about 2 months thats when the bad stomach started i have just had my hab1c which was 60

Hi. Doesn't your surgery have a GP or nurse who has some training in diabetes. My surgery put me onto insulin and I didn't have to wait for any hospital appointment. I would ask the practice nurse whether they have anyone who covers diabetes and if so insist on an urgent appointment. Otherwise, yes, go to A&E next time you go 'Hi'. If you are overweight then T2 is possible and lowering the carbs is essential whether T1 or T2.

Hi no i dnt think my gp surgery has anythin like that he cudnt give me insulin and i spoke to an out of hours doctor on sunday nite he cudnt help me either i dnt think am that overweight im 10.7 stone ive already lost over 3 stone and started loosin weight again now im a bit worried about waitin 6 weeks for my appointment bt dnt want to look stupid goin to a&e i know there high bt i dnt feel that unwell apart from the ichy skin and extremly tired and gettin up durin the nite to pee

Hello Cath40, I can see your are struggling with all that is going on with your bs levels. Might I say 6 weeks is a short wait for your appointment, but the stress of high readings is very frightening.
Have you considered ringing the hospital clinic and explaining your fear, and asking if there is any way the apponiment could be brought forward, due to the situation or ak them to ring you if a cancellation happens, to offer it to you.
It is unusual for a gp surgery has no diabetic nurse to help you, and your doctors reluctence to prescribe further drugs, as maybe t2, to lower the readings. As previous posts have said, changing what you eat, and lowering your cars and having some more protein, to keep you fuller and some more fluids to keep your system flushing out your body.
Cath, please try and keep calm, I know it's hard to do, but stress won't help you.
If you have another very hi reading, don't drive, if you feel so frightened you may have to ring 999, and the crew will be able to start helping you, while taking you to hospital, if this happens go during the day, as the diabetic specialist may well be in the hospital and they could call him to come and see you, while you are in A&E. I also had so of these Hi of the meter events, and wondered what to do, and just drank more fluids, as when I thought about what I had eaten, it was too many carbs been eaten. I am on 3 drugs for my t2, and now in a much better bs reading level, you will be sorted out and the combination for you found, keep posting to us, ttfn

HI. Thanks for the info. Do keep an eye on your blood sugar levels. It is always possible you are a Late onset T1 and not T2; many of us have been wrongly diagnosed in that respect. It can surface at widely varying speeds but if your sugars stay into the 20s you do need to seek attention before 6 weeks

thanks everyone for your replys i did go to a&e last night they did want to keep me in but because i wasnt feeling unwell they let me go home they have no fast tracked my appointment so hopefully i will get to see some one next week i have also found out last night that i have an inflamed liver so will have to go and see my gp about that not sure if thats gallstones or another side effect of the meds i was on will have to wait and see the doctor was really nice who i saw and understood my worries and she agreed that 6 weeks to wait is to long with sugar levels that high
