Are there any other people here that suffer with these two horrible diseases?
When I'm manic I think that I'm invincible, eat more than normal and neglect my blood glucose levels. When I'm depressed my appetite goes and, again, neglect my blood glucose levels.
It's a tightrope walk.

I don't have bipolar disorder but i do have what I believe is a stress problem since I get stressed out really easily, my doctor has diagnosed it as multifocal tic disorder

many people when being manic have a much higher metabolism and do burn much more calories than when being depressed.

But of cause the control of ones blood glucose is equally important when manic or depressed or in between..but hopefully people seek not no become manic ( and depressed ) by all means as that is to most a very devastating state, ruining every thing for both the person being manic and all the closest persons around the manic person, unfortunnately not all can control their disease... by medication

but how about caretakers around you , cant they be in charge and help you ?

Seeking not to be manic, or depressed, is beyond control. No matter what medications one is on for bipolar we all suffer great highs and great lows. I don't seek to have diabetes but I can't will it away.

One of the symptoms of Bipolar disease, as you know is greater than normal appetite in the manic state and less than normal in the depressed state. I have had depression in the past but have not experienced an episode in quite a while. I do tend to eat too much when I begin to feel a little sad. Many of the medications for depression also cause weight gain and are linked to developing Type 2 in later life. I think something management of both conditions has in common is trying to develop a regular, balanced life. (If you finish filling out your profile you will get more trophy points.)

I had tics when I was younger. I began yoga and meditation to try and help deal with stress at the root of them. Also, one of the medications I was on as a child may have had those side effects.

Hi,
I don't have Bi-polar but I'am a depressive and when its really bad I can't control anything as I have no motivation to help myself or anyone else. Not caring about anything I usually Binge eat on Carbohydrates and sugar. Which is not going to be good now I'm diabetic type 2. I'm trying my best not to go there at the moment, which is really hard as I'm on that tightrope with you most of the time. So I can emphasize with your predicament. You must find it even harder than I do having it both ways.
Look after your self, remember there is always someone on here to talk to or offer support.

I'm not Bi-polar but since my being diagnosed back in march haave become depressed, no motivation, it would be a lot worse without my dog I have to take him out for his walks other wise I would just sit. I have to force myself to eat, no interest for food, so I can understand how you others feel. I hope Santa brings me a happy, motivation pill and I will share it with you all.

I'm bipolar and I have type 2 diabetes . My meds have caused significant weight gain over time , I put 6 stone on when I was on olanzapine ( zyprexia ) tried a few different meds over the last 10 years , lithium worked the best but turned me into a non thinking zombie ....currently quite good on depakote , risperidone , something else i cant remember just now and metformin. I overeat when sad trying to get out of that habit. .... just lost 2 stone set my target for at least 5 stone ....

Congratulations on loosing two stone Paul. I was put on Olanzapine over the summer and put on 3 stone in 12 weeks, my consultant told me it was impossible!! Which I'm convinced helped to push me into becoming diabetic? But I can't prove that. It's good to hear I'm not the only one to gain weight on it. I'm currently working on loosing it again, try eating less carbohydrates as well as avoiding the over eating and sugar, it's working for me, as it seems to help most people to also control their diabetes, there's lot's of info on this site about it. Good luck with your further weight loss.

I suspect i might have bipolar but doctor keeps saying "i don't deal with mental health issues, ask a welfare officer or i'll refer you to a consultant" and they just forget we even had the conversation so I just had to deal with the 5 days of depression, bad mood and anxiety a week with the occasional few days of good mood, motivated, happy about life even though i've no job and living life on benefits. Furthermore, the government's cuts affected the welfare offices in that my DEA (disability employment adviser) was among those who were relocated elsewhere and the nearest CAB, or consultant for mental health is very hard to get to and am contemplating whether or not to bother since i've lived with it long enough and think I have had it since a child. But it's also reason enough to go as I have a consistently high HbA1c (above 15%), don't test, and go on how I feel to measure my glucose.

Yes, I have them both too. It is exhausting and can be overwhelming at times.

Hi there. What you are going through sounds so rough. There's a lot of misunderstanding about mental health and diabetes but you are not to blame for these 2 chemical situations in your brain and body obviously!
I am type 1 and whilst I was depressed and suffering an eating disorder, I had no care for my diabetes either. However the fact that I had both conditions did give me access to better support for the mental health side of things (seeing in a specialist in my university city Newcastle) becase it was so clearly damaging my health. In my diabetic centre in Guldford they have a therapist they can refer me to should I need it.
It is your doctor's job to act as a gateway to those services but it sounds as if he is not good at dealing with those kind of things. Can you change doctors/diabetic consultant with the hope of finding someone who 'gets you' ? I think your job is to keep fighting for yourself btw.x
