Hello
I am newly diagnosed (August 2016) with type 1 diabetes after an operation to debride infected bites on my back - probably mosquitos - I was bitten in this country as I have not been out of the country for years. When I was in hospital and since I have come out I have suffered with bowel problems sometimes severe. I went for my first diabetic review on Friday and the registrar suggested I get a blood test for coeliac disease - I am still waiting for the results but have been keeping a log of food containing gluten that I eat (not supposed to stop eating gluten until you are diagnosed) and I have noticed that my symptoms do occur shortly afterwards. My diabetes is under control at the moment with my blood glucose levels normally around 5 to 11. I just wondered if anyone has both type 1 diabetes and coeliac.

Hello Katrina and welcome to the forum.
Yes there are loads of us on the forum who have both so welcome to club if you are diagnosed with coeliac as an added bonus. Reading labels is a right pain in the article regarding gluten and wheat content :(

Thank you both. In some ways I am hoping it is coeliac because at least then it explains what is happening in that area. I am hoping the results are at the doctors today so may find out when I go and have my back wound (which is shrinking and now is 12cm by 5cm) dressed.

I am Coeliac too and felt so ill for months before diagnosis and then when diagnosed it was so much better. The result comes in two parts and are you having an endoscopy too ?
Good luck.

Have you been referred to a gastroenterologist?

I would be asking for a referral to talk to someone that specialises in stimach disorders.

I've had cameras up and down, honestly the worst thing for me was the preparation. My food stays in me too long, so I had to start the stomach emptying everyday for 5 days.. as I wanted my levels right I also had a dummy run the week before, as not eating and only drinking clear water etc can lower bloods. My basal injection in morning went from 6 down to 2.

Don't fret, I can't eat any form of flour evn gluten free and its not the end of the world.

Neither are the tubes. If you have the tubes.. make sure you have no plans other than being at home the day before.... getting your stomach empty means dashing for the loo very fast!!

Wonderful. I had a colonoscopy two weeks ago for a polyps and had to take 3 movipreps as the time before they could not do the procedure as the 2 sachets did not work well enough. I will believe you when you say not to worry about the tube down your throat but I think it will be sedation and tying me down. I did have sedation for the colonoscopy and I did feel most of it. At the moment I cannot get an appointment to see my gp until 19th Dec so will have to wait to find out whether anything showed up in the blood test.

I had both ends done at the same session - completely zonked out for the top end and only mildly aware of the bottom end. I was glad that they did the top end first ;)

If there was a problem surely your GP would ring you? (Mine does) If you have a DSN give her a ring the results will be on the hospital computer as well and the DSN can tell you the result :)

The surgeon doing my stomach tests.. top and bottom at same time sedated to get the tube down throat but was still merrily talking a way to me! I wanted to talk back but annoyingly had to stay mmmmummmmn till he started on bottom!! He congratulated me on how empty I was especially my paralyses colon. Told him what I had done to achieve it and he was genuinely amazed that somebody would "practice for perfection".... (for 10 days in total).....

He did say they could have "hoovered" stuff out uf necessary... yuch!!! Strange watching your insides. I was fascinated...
