Concerned about wait for diagnosis

I myself am a Type 2 diabetic, controlled by diet and exercise without medication. However, I am very concerned for a friend who is awaiting a diagnosis, without there being any apparent urgency in reaching such diagnosis or deciding on medication.

His symptoms became apparent in late November/early December, when he began to lose weight rapidly, started to feel somewhat lethargic and his vision suddenly improved. He is 69 years of age, exercises regularly, is of good physique/BMI, does not drink other than in absolute moderation and exercises regularly.

After visiting his GP in the second week of December, he was asked to monitor his blood sugar levels and was subsequently prescribed Gliclazide. He continues to monitor the blood sugar levels and throughout the day and on different days, the levels can vary between 5 and 17. It is yet to be decided whether he is Type 1 or Type 2.

Am I right to be concerned that there seems to be no urgency in reaching a diagnosis, and should I be encouraging him to seek a specialist opinion?

Hi. I can understand why at age 69 the surgery aren't quite sure of the diagnosis. Around 20% of so-called T2s are not overweight (in fact lose weight preceding diagnosis) and hence are probably not insulin resistant but suffering a failing pancreas; I am one of those and there are many others. The tests for T1 aren't always conclusive and the only approach is to have a meter and a low-carb portion controlled diet and check the readings. Prescribing Gliclazide seems sensible as it prods the pancreas. When my GP added Sitagliptin it helped with spikes. Hopefully the sugars won't rise by much before you see the GP again. Obviously if the tablets don't control the sugar then insulin may be needed but discuss all this with the GP. If you aren't happy with the GP then ask to be referred.
