Hey @romeo21 and welcome to the forum.

Firstly, breathe - it's okay. Everything is okay. There is cause for concern from what you've written, but I don't think it's panic-stations yet.

Before anyone can really offer some sound advice, can I ask some questions - might be you don't know the answers.

- You "think" he has T2 - do you know whether he has or not, and what medication he's on?

- Assuming he does have T2, how is his care arranged - does he have a diabetic nurse / consultant / dietician? Are his annual checks up to date (eye screening, foot checks etc)? Are you able to find out his last HbA1c?

- Is your dad otherwise competent and independent? Or are you caring / looking after him for some / all of the time?

- What does he typically eat? Does he regularly test his blood glucose levels?

- Leg pain can be caused by many things. If his leg is hot, swollen and reddened, get him to A&E immediately.

The first thing is to, maybe, have a frank conversation with your dad about his medical needs and whether he needs your help in managing them - it really can be a full-time job, arranging and chasing all those tests, appointments and check-ups and it's easy for someone to feel overwhelmed by it all but not know how to ask for help.

Assuming your chat with your dad goes well, I think, perhaps, you need to accompany him to a GP appointment about that leg. Maybe try to see a different / new GP and get hold of a print-out of his test results and find out how his care is managed, what meds he's on and so on.

If his pain is severe enough that it's causing pain and a loss of mobility, it could be anything from a hip problem to a muscular issue and needs more serious investigation that pain relief - it's the difference between treating the symptoms and understanding the cause, and no-one deserves to live a restricted, painful lifestyle. It may or may not be related to his diabetes, but you need to understand the whole picture before you can really take any action - and so do we if we're to offer good, sound advice based upon our own experiences.

Not the most helpful reply, I know - and I'm sorry. But there's no need to panic and with a bit more info, the lovely folks here will have much more to offer you.

Hang in there, Romeo.

Sock x

Welcome to the forum, hopefully we can put your mind at rest. Parents can be very worrying.

he has been to the doctor and all they are giving him is pain killers.

Is he taking a statin for controlling cholesterol? In the UK they seem to be routinely dished out with medication for diabetes. I'm only mentioning them because they gave me so much grief and the GP at the time tried to tell me it was something else. I had a different excuse every time I mentioned my leg pain.

he has lost so much weight

How old is he? Weight loss can be a number of things, including getting old.

i was thinking of just taking him to a private specialist

Not sure what country you live in, I see you posted at 04:00 UK time so maybe North America. If you're in the UK you'd have to get a referral from a General Practitioner to see a specialist. Seeing a specialist suggests that you have an idea of the problem, diabetic specialist maybe?

You need to gather as much information as you can. I know from dealing with older relatives, they need to accept that you may be able to help them and that they will let you do that. Remain calm and suggest ways to help, many of us dislike change and disruption as we get older. Find out what he knows about his conditions. What does he eat, and when. You will find a lot of information and help on this site about the sort of things he should be eating, and importantly what he should not. Is he able to do much? Can he take exercise such as walking? Bear in mind his appetite may be reduced, and can you find things he is happy to eat? The more you know, and can tell us here, the more useful our suggestions will become. If you can get him to a specialist they may be able to find out how to deal with his leg pain and what is causing that. Pain is bound to make him worried and less likely to take care of his other problems. I had a lot of trouble with my father and I sympathise!

Hi @romeo21 It depends on how old he is as well, my dad had loss weight, he eats well and is in a good and caring care home, he is nearly 94. Somethings are unexplained, but any unexplained weight loss should be investigated asap, also his pain needs a more thorough investigating too, pain killers do help but it's finding out what is causing his pain and the lack of mobility because of it. Take him to the Gp with questions already written down, if that is not possible, then a home visit would be needed. Are you in the UK ?
Good luck and I hope your dad feels better soon.
Take care.
