Driving A Steam Engine

I have had a lifelong ambition to own a steam engine and have decided that if I do not do so soon I probably never will. I was wondering if there was anyone out there (on insulin) who drove a steam engine. The DVLA web site was totally confusing and I thought it worth getting some background information before I rang the DVLA. Thanks in anticipation.

Hi Stephen, :)

You can drive a steam engine with full category B car licence, you should find this info on the DLVA web site.
Exempted large goods vehicles
If you hold a full category B (car) driving licence you can drive a number of large agricultural vehicles:

goods vehicles propelled by steam eg large vehicles with coal or wood burning engines

There is also a steam rally this weekend in Bloxham http://banburyrally.com/ or ring them for advice etc;

If you have a driving licence cleared by the DVLA for health reasons all should be fine.

I wish you great fun in your venture with steam.( you also usually have a second person on board to be on the safe side.)

Roy. :)
