DVLA and gp report

Hi

Have lurked a long time but now feel i need some advice regarding my driving license.

Have recently contacted the DVLA to update my photograph and to inform them of the neuropathy in my feet like you are supposed to do, and filled in their questionnaires.

2 days ago i received another questionnaire regarding my diabetes and my insulin control, erm..... no idea what they are on about as i am not on insulin, but on victoza injection and have been for 2yrs and my diabetes is well under control hba1c 6.2.

I contacted the DVLA and stated that i am not on insulin, and that i had sent 4 pages of my case notes in with the questionaire i filled in which also contained my medication. They then stated that my GP had said that i was on insulin, so they needed more information. I again said look at my list of medications and you will see that i am not on insulin and that my diabetes is not managed by my gp, but by a hospital diabetic clinic and i have a diabetes specialist nurse as well as a consultant who prescribes my diabetes medication. I said can i get a letter from the diabetes clinic stating my medications and the fact i am not on insulin, they said "no your gp has stated that you are on insulin, so he needs to retract this statement stating that a mistake had been made and that your not on insulin"

The gp who filled in my forms in an old gp about to retire from the practice who doesn't see patients anymore but just does private work and fills in forms for the DVLA and DLA/PIP etc. I have never seen this gp, never had any sort of discussions with him and haven't a clue who he is, infact he is in a different surgery 10 miles away and although i am part of the surgery we are in a different location and the gp's work between the 2 surgerys

I contacted his personal secretary whom i can only speak to on a Wednesday between 2 and 4, and she is like a rottweiler protecting her young, who said that yes he did write that i am insulin controlled, yes i said he wrote it and not ticked a wrong box he actually wrote "patient has peripheral neurothapy as a complication of diabetes and is insulin controlled" she read this out to me over the phone, and when i said can i have a copy as i was concerned as to what else he might have wrongly written she said no i couldn't as it was for DVLA only.

She then said i needed to contact diabetes team to get them to sort it out as they are the ones who prescribed the medication, and the gp just issues the monthly prescription.

To say i am fuming is an understatement, the DVLA state that i have to provide information i am not on insulin and the gp has to retract the statement within 21 days or they will revoke my licence.

Am putting a complaint in to the gp practice manager but i dont hold out much hope as the practice manager is the gp's wife, and am going to see another gp on Tuesday to see what is in my records/notes again i dont hold out much hope as this gp is his brother-in-law

Sorry its so long and for me having a moan, but am just sooooo fed up as i have got a brand new motability car, which i cant drive due to the fact motability insurance need a copy of my driving license and i dont have it as i sent it away to DVLA, although i am legally entitled to drive, i cant drive the motability car as i cant give a photocopy of my license for the motability insurance, so my husband is having to drive me around and i sent my licence to the DVLA 25th January 2015, it has taken this long to get the gp to fill in the questionaires

Wow what a predicament, hope you get this sorted with second GP.

Easy to be wise after the fact, but I always keep a copy of my licence filed away somewhere. I even have a copy of my original driving test pass certificates from over 30 years ago, because I don't trust the postmen. or even DVLA come to that.

Good luck anyway.

thanks for the reply, i do have a copy of my old license but the photo is out of date as its over 10yrs old which is why i sent it in to the DVLA in the first place. Motobility wont accept this as the photo on the licence has gone past the expiry date, oh the joys lol

I have got a fantastic letter from my hospital consultant who manages my diabetes which states i am not on insulin and that i am safe to drive and that i should have an ordinary licence not a medical one.

Am emailing them off on monday, so lets see if that will help, now any tips on how to strangle my gp lol (joking)

People that can't listen to other people's opinions.
People that can't say sorry.
I would add in to your email that your GP's do not look after your diabetes and that because of this the DVLA should be taking advice from the Consultant who informs the GP of the insulin that you are prescibed and as such they should accept the letter from the Special rather than a General Practitioner who has never seen you.

I think you will find that having this in writing to them would prompt them to re look at the situation.

Looks like a result scouser-smurf!

Regarding your final question, make sure there are no witnesses.

Can I recommend that you print out yr email and send it recorded delivery to the DVLA and also cc yr hospital consultant and GP so that all concerned are aware of the GP mistae in ticking the wrong box and should be able to act to sort this mess out.

Then I suggest you write to the DVLA explaining you have never seen this GP and enquire if he is being paid by the DVLA to write fictional medical reports and is it legal for him to do so. If no joy from the practice manager complain to the BMA about the GP.
