How do people know they have this? Doesn't everyone who is overweight have it?
Does it actually do any harm? More than diabetes that is.

Normally you would only know if you'd been told by your doctor after an imaging scan like an ultrasound or if you have an elevated ALT or GGT on your liver function test - normally at that point the doctor will tell you to moderate your alcohol (and sometimes not believe you when you say you rarely drink). A lot of evidence is now showing NAFLD as one of the hallmarks of Type 2/metabolic syndrome.

It is definitely serious if you don't modify your diet to improve the outcome and restore your liver function tests to normal. The outcomes can be just as serious as if you are a heavy drinker. The damage is the same whether it's caused by alcohol or a diet high in refined carbohydrates, sugars of all kinds and processed seed oils - in other words, most of the processed food in supermarkets.

Try to avoid spicy, oily foods and take alcohol quite moderately(if you have the habit of taking alcohol). There are some drugs too those may cause fatty liver too. You need not be scared. Consult your GP for prolific suggestions.

Recently it is believed fructose is often a problem causing high GGT.

I have a high GGT but it is coming down and I am not overweight and don't drink alcohol but mine is likely caused by prescribed drugs.

@spendercat - Hello :). I just found out 2 weeks ago from the Liver Specialist that I have Fatty Liver = NAFLD (Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease) and Fibrosis (scarring) of the Liver.
Mine could well have been caused(?) by taking Methotrexate and Biological Drugs for the past 10 years.

I am not overweight, only weigh 13 stone (exact) and yet been told by the Liver Specialist to lose 1 stone, follow a low Fat Diet.
I began 5 days ago taking Milk Thistle tablets because I read about another forum member taking Milk Thistle for 6 months and when he had his check up with the Liver Specialist his Fatty Liver had gone.

Hi all, There appears to be a lot of milk thistle products on the market. Has anyone an idea of the most reliable and the dose that may be required? My GGT has been 140+ but now down to 76. Thanks Derek PS I see it is claimed to bring down BG and LDL?

I bought mine from Amazon.co.uk - Natures Aid Milk Thistle 137.5mg x 60 for £9.09 post free.
It states on the box 1 -2 tablets a day. But, I am only taking 1 tablet a day. I see the Liver Specialist again in 4 months and here's hoping by taking the Milk Thistle there has been some good effect done? :)

Thanks Liam I shall try them but will have to cross check against my other non diabetic meds. I think the amount you are taking is a prudent approach.
I hope you have success with this highly rated liver remedy.

Hi

RE being large and having a fatty liver

Before I lost over 10 st with Roux-en-Y bariatric surgery I had to go on a strict diet for 3 weeks to reduce the size of my liver before the op could be done.
The strict diet reduced the size of my liver so if it was large due to fatty deposits it reduced so you can be obese without having a fatty liver

Only had the op. to reduce huge amount of insulin as worried about becoming insulin intoleranthe after over 40 years on it and it certainly worked after dropping to 13st 2lb (5 ft 10in male) and insulin requirement decreased dramatically.

Unfortunately buckmr my BMI is already c.22. I don't think my problem is due to be overweight and my HDL is 1.7 ;Trigs 1.0 and HbA1c now 42..so my other markers of metabolic disease are ok, if not ideal.

Fine buckmr, no problem I was pointing out contrary to the normal perception fatty liver is not always linked to obesity or indeed the use of alcohol for that matter.

There is a lot of information out there. I will have to digest all this. I had never even heard of NAFL Disease.
On the subject of milk thistle, wouldn't a tincture of milk thistle be the most simple and effective way of taking it? I take 8 drops in water now and again.

I was told many years ago now that I had a fatty liver but there was nothing to do about it. Usual guff from doctors! I finally discovered that I could have done something about it a few months back but now I'm told I have cirrhosis and am not at present being given much encouragement about improvement. I have never been a drinker of alcohol and may well have been undiagnosed diabetic since I had my last son 47 years ago. finally diagnosed about 10 years ago. These issues are just 2 undiagnosed problems over the years which are currently and finally being investigated. Where do all these medical professionals get their skills from?

You might find the following blogposts useful - written by one of our members who has been researching and coaching others on the subject of liver health:

I'll tag @George_Henderson in case he has some further information on cirrhosis for you :)
