forxiga and feminine itching....

Been on forxiga nearly a year, with good results.
I know this tablet flushes sugar out of your body when you wee, and because of this there are high instances of thrush infections.
Approx 4 weeks ago I started with 'the itch'...thinking it was the start of thrush I got some Canesten, and started using it...but the itching didn't progress to a full bout of thrush, there's been no discharge and the itching has continued..I've tried nappy rash cream to try and soothe it, and a calming wash the chemist in Spain gave me when it first started - the wash does seem to take the edge off the itching, but nothing seems to be curing it.
Anyone else had itchy issues with forxiga?

It is listed as one of the possible side effects on the P.I.L.
http://xpil.medicines.org.uk/ViewPil.aspx?DocID=27191

Other side effects when taking Forxiga:
Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people)

  • genital infection (thrush) of your penis or vagina (signs may include irritation, itching, unusual discharge or odour)
  • back pain
  • passing more water (urine) than usual or needing to pass water more often
  • changes in the amount of cholesterol or fats in your blood (shown in tests)
  • changes in the amount of red blood cells in your blood (shown in tests)
  • dizziness
Uncommon (may affect up to 1 in 100 people)

  • thirst
  • constipation
  • awakening from sleep at night to pass urine
  • dry mouth
  • weight decreased
  • changes in laboratory blood tests (for example creatinine or urea)
  • decrease in kidney function
I would see you G.P. and he may be able to help. It can't be much fun if this is constant.

This happened to me when I started being diabetic 5 yrs. ago in the beginning; not only did i get thrush but also skin allergies and hair changes. But at that time my numbers were 30 to 13. Once I was treated with Metformin and glyclazine those symptoms disappeared. It is obviously an effect of high blood glucose.

Just started on Forxiga so will watch out for the itch. I have noticed though that about 2 hours after taking it I get severe backache. It's early days yet though.

I was on Forxiga for over six months and though it started well ,I found eventually I had to run for the toilet desparately all the time and had so many accidents I had to carry spare underwear even to walk for the bus .
Holidays were spent searching for , running to and cleaning up after going to the loo and it was extremely depressing .
I've been taken off Forxiga now ,and my doctor has put me on insulin, when the new diabetic nurse is trained . Unfortunately I'm now getting extremely high readings as I've spent five weeks on Metformin and Glimepiride with neither Forxiga or Insulin to supplement it , and despite contacting my surgery , nobody seems to know when I can see the diabetic nurse and start on imsulin

Acceptance of health treatment claims that are not adequately supported by evidence. I dislike it when people sell ineffective and even harmful alternative health products to exploit the desperation of people with chronic illness.

I would contact them again and insist they either get something sorted with a nurse, or let you see a doctor who can start you on insulin. If they can't do this within say a week, they should refer you to the hospital. It's just not good enough.

I don't know anything about your history with diabetes, but have you considered whether you might have LADA or MODY diabetes and not type 2? Just a thought. Might be irrelevant but I thought I would mention it just in case.

I've not had any experience of either type, although My Gran on the maternal side , and my dad both had diabetes for some years .
I was diagnosed with type 2 in January 2000 ,was on Glimepiride for a few months then taken off them and was diet controlled for a few years before being put back on Metformin ,and then Glimepiride added , which kept me under control.
For the last year or so we've been travelling 200 miles to see my mum in hospital each day and eating when we could , which has totally blown my BS readings as both meds and meals have been irregular and disrupted and often unbalanced ,which is why I was given the chance to try Forxiga .
I was warned I'd have to go on insulin , so I did expect it . I just wish the nurse could instruct me on injecting and I could start the Insulin . I'd love to go on one of the courses too, as I've never had chance

Keep speaking up and asking for what you need. Sorry to hear about your Mum, I hope things improve for her.

Thank you for the encouragement, I now have a date for learning to use my insulin , so fingers crossed all goes well .
Mum died , but it was a blessing and truly what she wanted , so we have to be pleased for her sake .
Wish me luck with the insulin

I've been on Forxiga for nearly 6 months now and have lost about 4 lb. I had been expecting more. I started on 10mg a day and was taken off Gliclazide but my sugar levels went up, over 10 every time, and I had constant itching. Now I am on 5mg a day and also back on Gliclazide and the sugar levels have dropped to 6/7, (still not good enough says my consultant), but I still get the itching. Caneston is useless but my GP prescribed Dakacort which does the trick.

hi, did you have lower glucose levels when you were taking forxiga--or was it the gliclazide that lowered your glucose levels?

My glucose levels went up when taking Forxiga as I was told to stop the Gliclazide but as soon as I started it again they went down. It seems Gliclazide works for me as I was told to stop taking it a couple of years ago and take Sitagliptin instead and the same thing happened. So it was back to Gliclazide again.

Went on Foxiga in June, by July had the worst case of swelling in the lady bits...resembled two testicles, went to doctor who referred me urgently to colorectal specialist as thought it was a bad case of piles....however, it was decided it was an extreme reaction to the burning/ itching affect of urine on my delicate bits....\my skin was so affected it kept splitting and bleeding, it was dreadfully painful....
Came off Foxiga, and symptoms disappeared along with the swelling within a week.

Note : Canestan do a 'wash' which is glycerin based, from most chemists about £7.00, OHHH the relief , it is bliss....

Now back on Victoza, my body tolerates that better than Foxiga, which should have been banned by now!!

Why do they keep prescribing Forxiga when the side effects are so bad? Took myself off it as the itching was horrendous and nothing seemed to help. Couldn't sleep because of it and was up to the loo every hour. My sugar levels improved once I stopped taking it too. My treatment has just been devolved to the community and they are very pleased with my results and control, still haven't got down to 5 but it's usually between 6 and 8.
Have tried Victoza but couldn't tolerate that. After 3 months I was still constantly nauseous and my appetite was nil so was taken off that. I'm now on Metformin, Gliclazide, Sitagliptin and Levimir injections twice a day.
