hello. does anybody have any information regarding conflicts between insulin (mixard) and liquid based anti acid solutions? my ten year old daughter (diagnosed june 09 type1) has recently complained of heartburn and a bloated feeling - not necessarily after eating. she had one teaspoon late last night, but a few hours later her Bg had dropped to 2.8 I could not get her Bg to rise above 5 - no matter what she ate. her monitors were checked yesterday with both control solutions, so i assume they are accurate. or any suggestions for natural remedies would be welcome. thanks in advance.

soaps on telly and people talking about the characters as if they were real.
I would get a doctor to check out your daughter's digestive system. Needing an antacid isn't very common in children.

actually, i think reflux is quite a common illness suffered by children that woul;d require an antiacid traetment.

This is something we do not have any information about here. In the circumstances the sensible solution would be to discuss this with your GP, as Hana stated. I certainly wouldn't advise any other type of treatment until the GP has advised you.

One small question, when she is hypo what exactly do you feed her to counteract the hypo ?

Sally,

I took gaviston for a year or two before being diagnosed with a hiatus hernia, which I take a lansoprazole tablet to suppress the acid. I never noticed it lowing or raising my blood glucose, and I had it on prescription from doctors. That's not to say that it may not with your daughter, so can't say yes or no. Following the advice from the others, I would take your daughter along to her gp and get this heartburn/bloating feeling checked out. Until you see her gp, I wouldn't give her the gaviscon just in case.

Regards

Nigel

Hi
Im not a Doc but its not contraindicated with blood sugar as far as I know. I take lansoprazole too, and zantac now and again. Dont touch antacids as some have sucrose in them but I dont think Gaviscon would have caused this reaction, but thats just opinion

Hypos versus food probs sometimes signifies something in diabetics called gastroparesis but to be honest this seems to be a long term complication and I would very much bet its not that.

Could it perhaps just be the mixtard is too strong in dosage?

Bearing in mind the (joys?) of mixtard being that whatever amount of food you take to 'set' it in the morning/evening you need to take similar at the next part of the day (ie lunch time or snack time) to ensure no hypos later. Mixed insulin is hard to be precise with due to risk of being too high or too low if you dont get it right across a whole day. I always found I would be hypo mid morning if I took too much to tackle my breakfast, and the same again at night If my snack at night was too low, or my dinner not carby enough. I always need more in the morning and with mixtard I was taking almost double am than pm- so maybe look at dose

I would however get her to docs anyway - heartburn is murder!

Sally,

Pleased you got sorted. I would imagine that gaviscon may not be suitable for all children under 12, regardless of type 1. Hope things settle down soon, if not go back to gp and ask for a referal to a specialist.
