Help Interpreting Test Results. Could this be LADA?

Soon after eating your blood glucose rises then dips a little before reaching the spike.
My endocrinologist has only seen it different in myself and other RH patients. We don't pause, just straight to the spike.
Could you explain what this means and how you see it from the plots? I'm a little lost! Thanks

The dip is the initial insulin response and secondary insulin response.
RH ers, have their secondary response much later.
Ok??

do you normally eat the last meal on your graphs. If not then you will spike high. I find that too but when I have been fast carbing for a few days it settles down. You still didnt go above the level that would make you diabetic. You do seem to be very sensitive to insulin though and fall fast. Personally from what you have posted your pancreas seems to be working fine; it could be the liver being a little slow to respond and therefore the hypos.

Hopefully your doctor will send you to see a specialised.

Hi @andcol,

Interesting thought. My normal diet is low carb, maybe very low carb but I've never actually calculated anything. The only carbs I've been eating recently are above ground vegetables and occasionally some fruit.( Oh, and carrots too.) So, I did break my normal routine to run these tests.

On the other hand, many years ago I did see similar glucose spikes after eating candy. At that time, I was on a normal diet.

The one thing I know is I feel much better not eating a lot of carby food, and since once I start eating carbs the urge to eat more is irresistible, I find it is easiest just to avoid them completely.

Yeah, I imagine I will get sent back to the endo that I saw last month. Cheers.

Update: I saw the GP today. She said the high spikes in blood sugar could be an early sign of type II. She suggested I take another glucose tolerance test to try to catch the spike at 1hr. I hesitated since
  • I already know there is going to be spike
  • I don't think going hypo again is good for me ( if that happens )
  • I don't need another one of these bruises for no reason.

She said I could think about it. I asked about testing for LADA too. After a confusing discussion on the definition of LADA, my suggestion was dismissed. She did say she would speak to an endo about it, though.

Well, there ya go! Although I didn't get the testing I wanted, the rest of the appointment concerning stuff unrelated to diabetes went well.

At least you got something out of the appointment!
Keep pushing to see a specialist!

Best wishes.

I know this thread is older, but I have similar issues. I’m wondering what your GTT showed, and if you got a diagnosis.

Thanks!

@Mweirum

I hope you see this at some point. Sorry for the very late response. I haven't visited here for a long while.

At the time my previous posts on this thread were written, I was diagnosed with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome ( POTS ) and with "hypoglycemia" based on the GTT results. My doc did not make any connection whatsoever between the two.

Since then, it has become apparent there is a connection. POTS is a form of autonomic dysfunction. It is very likely that part of the dysfunction involves "rapid gastric emptying" or "gastric dumping," where the contents of the stomach are dumped too quickly into the small intestine leading to spikes in blood sugar when high carb meals are eaten.

Here is a nice lecture from a PotsUK conference which lays out the connection.

Although I went hypo with the GTT, I never caught a significant hypo with home testing after eating regular meals. I tend to spike a lot with moderate carb meals though. I think many of my symptoms were more the result of rapid spikes and fluctuations of blood sugar, rather than simply being too low.

Anyway, the actual cause doesn't seem to matter. The solution is the same: LCHF diet. I still have POTS, but keeping my blood sugar under control keeps my symptoms way down.

Hope this helps.

You are correct, the actual condition is not the critical part of diagnosis, the treatment is! You having the knowledge to control your response is important enough to realise that dietary control will make you healthier.
Well done!

Thanks @Lamont D

I should have paid more attention to your now 2-year old post.

You are some kind of prophet! I didn't really figure this out until a year later.

Cheers
Hi @skwag ,

Thanks for the compliment, but it is nothing as miraculous as you are making out.
It is a question of knowledge and research and my own personal battle with health care providers. If I hadn't been referred to my specialist, I probably would not be here!
And even that was by chance!

When I was going through all the tests and trying to figure out all the food that triggered the response. I was amazed at finding so much information about going low carb and the difference it could make to how I was able to control.
I found that not eating was even better, it helped with my energy levels and my brain fog disappeared.

There was no mystery, only a realization that so called healthy foods were making me so unhealthy!

It is so good that you have actually achieved that understanding, the need to find what is really healthy for you, personally!

Well done, so pleased for you! May it continue for you.

My best wishes
