High blood sugar after meals - drowsiness

Hi,

I was really awake and concentrating well then I had a meal which was high-carb, opps.
I have suffered from fatigue for a long time and I noticed the biggest difference was cutting out sugar. I have noticed int he past the fatigue often is worse after meals.

Just now I was feeling quite good but then I ate and now I feel terrible. I took my reading at about 30 mins after and it was 10.1 mmol.

Any ideas as to what this could be? (I'm not diagnosed with diabetes).

If you are sure it is the carbs to blame, why not reduce the amount you eat, this should then resolve the problem. Try replacing the carbs with vegetables.

Pre my diagnosis last year I used to always feel like this after a meal. It was particularly pronounced after a typical Sunday Lunch of roast beef & Yorkshire puds. I usually had to go for a nap afterwards.

Since my diagnosis and my subsequent switch to low carb eating regime the fatigue has vanished, as have my afternnon "naps"

I think its carbs, from what I have observed. Or rahter the lack of balance in the meal- there was no fat at all. I think I will try smaller meals and less carbs. But I'd still like to know what could caurse this. I don't think its diabetes as my levels don't remain elevated. its went down to 5.6 30 mins later but now it gone to 6.2. Must have been the tea. Could be "pre-diabetes"?

thanks for your replies :)

People who are touchy.......feign indignation at the slightest thing. Hypocrites, bullies and cowards.
You seem to have had this same problem ever since your posts back in 2008. Have you ever consulted your GP about this. I would have thought by now you might have 'cracked it.' Most replies to you seemed to indicate you had a high carb intake.....that would probably do it.

Hi.
I have exactly the same problem, I know this is a old post so you might not still be here. I feel terrible after I eat so tired and when I wake up I feel like I have a slight hangover. I have now been told I am pre-diabetic and that is what you might be. I bought my self a monitor and keep a record of my levels. I am feeling bad at the moment because I had chinese last night high carb. My blood was 11.4 two house afte eating.

This is a new post started today, not old at all.

The mention of 2008 is to one of the members Quin-serison, who appears to have asked the same thing in 2008 and doesn't appear to have sorted it that's all.

High Bg numbers will make you feel drowsy, so you may need to address the issues which sugarless sue posted in your other thread. As she states there you MUST consult with your HCP's about this due to your complications.

Hi, yeah I forgot exactly what I posted. I've been to the doctors plenty of times but they've been of no help what so ever so I'm left trying to figure it out by my self I've had this problem for 5 years now. I did cut down my carb intake and try to get more fat in my diet. I have spates of it being better and then worse again. But lately its been really bad then the earlier reaction caused me to re-think this carb thing. I wonder if the problems I've had lately are due to me getting lax with my diet. I don't think it can be pre-diabetes as my levels are back down to 5.6 2 hours after eating. So now im just thinking I'm extra sensitive to carbs for some reason. I know a lot of people get sleepy after high-carb meals but I don't know anyone who has the extreme reaction I do and when other people have the same meal they don't have a problem like I do.

Rude people! Not being able to do the things I want to do.
Have you ever been checked out for Gluten Intolerance ? One of it's symptoms is extreme tiredness. However there are many other conditions it could also be.

You mention doctors but have you sought a second opinion from a more specialised doctor such as an Endocrinologist ?
