Hi, wonder if you can help me, I went to the doctor some time ago as I feel I have alot of the symptoms of diabetes, she done 1 fast blood test and that was it, nothing else, said levels were a bit off but nothing to worry about. Been reading up that more than one has to be done and other tests also, but she wont do them.
I get dizzy spells, feel shaky alot, always thirsty, crave sugary foods that I dont really like that much. Feel faint if go without food for anymore than 2 hours, get urine infections more often than anyone else I know, recuring boils/absesses, athletes foot, rashes on my hands and face, very dry skin blurry vision now and again and abnormally low blood pressure and a few other problems to embarrasing to say.
I cant get any of them at the doctors to do more tests or refer me to specialist, should I go to another surgery for a second opionion, does what ive said above sound like I have infact got diabetes.

Hi dizzylynn,
Welcome to the forum.

If your doctor is aware of all these symptoms and is not prepared to do anything then it is time to move on !!

Is there another doctor in the practise that you could go to as I know it is not easy changing doctors and it takes a while?

Tried a test at the chemist, lets say my levels didnt say I wasnt but didnt say I was either it was inconclusive. However the assistant that done the test ran out and got the pharmasist in, I was sitting baffled, whats wrong, she came rushing in, are you ok do you feel faint, is there someone that can come and get you, I was sitting there completely confused, WHY I asked. Your blood pressure is far to low you need to get to doctor, I felt fine, well my normal self.
My dad has diabetes type 1, my son also is showing signs, increased weight loss but eats alot, however he has adhd, ocd and is on meds for them so not sure if its the meds causing the weight loss. I also have adhd and started meds 2 years ago, losing about 2 stones in 10 months with out really changing the amount I ate, I thought it was the meds, but my freind said it cant just have been the meds. I have put some back on and always feel tired. Cant think of why.
Been to doctor over and over, she just wont listen even tried other doctors in same practice, they look at my file and do nothing. Friend said go get a second opinion.

Yes it is time to move on. Find another doctor quickly.
If you feel really rough at times then I would present yourself at A@E , perhaps that is the way forward because at least you would see someone and have blood tests.
Hope this helps,
Catherine.

WELL just called other practice in area, cant even get second opinion, the list is closed. Ive to fill this form in. Get moved under special grounds but be outwith area.
I remember getting the test done, but when i asked her to do other one she looked at my file and said theres nothing here, yet she was the one who read out the results not long after I had it done. So it dissappeared has it. All she does is give me antibitics and said you just have a virus or something. Waste of tax payers money.

Your doctors sound dangerously clueless, I really would try as hard as you can to get a different one (BTDT) sounds like they are dismissing all your symptoms as "mental"

As to your blood sugar, at least you can test this for yourself if you buy a meter from your pharmacy, the meters don't cost much but the strips do. Likewise for blood pressure monitors.

You can get your BG tested at many pharmacies but it may not mean much, it sounds from your symptoms as if you may have Reactive Hypoglycemia where your BG goes high immediately after eating but your pancreas is still capable of producing pleanty of insulin albeit late, which causes your BG to drop rapidly, so try eating something fairly carby then testing 1/2 hour 1 2 3 and 4 hours afterwards

http://www.alt-support-diabetes.org/NewlyDiagnosed.htm

this can be an early stage of diabetes and like "impaired" glucose tolerance the earlier you start to control it the more likely you are to slow down or halt the progression to "real" diabetes and reverse some of your symptoms.

In view of your family history you may actually have one of the "rare" forms of diabetes like one of the MODYs

http://projects.exeter.ac.uk/diabetesgenes/index.htm

unfortunately with your current doctors you'll never know

Whats the best foods to eat, and things to avoid with this. Last thing i want is to end up with type 2 and loose my licence, had alot of bother getting it with the ADHD, not wanting to loose it now.

Have a read around here

http://loraldiabetes.blogspot.com/2006/10/d-day.html

particularly what he writes about "grazing"

What you mainly need to avoid is large quantities of carbs at any one time, but you may need more than some of the ultra low carbers only spread out during the day, only testing your own responses can determine your specific diet. What you need to do is avoid doing the highs after eating: once you have them under control the lows will largely go away on their own. You'll probably also have to be wary of differing levels of exercise, and at different times of day.

For example, I can do around 15g carbs at breakfast - much more than him - but I can only do 30g in the evening, or 50g on occasion, he can do more. I tend to eat plenty of protein especially at breakfast, and loads of salad and vegetables, and especially fish. White meat is generally good, I seem able to do red meat and saturated fats without the problems others get. But then I don't eat eggs (don;t like the taste, I prefer to wait until they grew up). Cheese and nuts and berries are OK, I also need to be careful with other forms of fruit but you may find some don;t spike you as much as others.

When I'm busy I will tend to snack on mixed things like an oatcake with nut butter or cheese (and blueberries!) or ryebread and butter, so I'm getting small quantities of carbs diluted with plenty of fat and protein but over time I'm finding my BG has become much more stable with less snacking required.

Many "authorities" refuse to believe this is a real illness, until it has progressed as far as a true diabetes diagnosis, but all the reactive hypoglycemics I know, and a small but significant number of Type 2s, appear to have symptoms going back to childhood, and the treatment is exactly the same as for diabetes proper: control your carb input to prevent BG changes. The sooner you start the more likely you are to slow or stop the progression.

You may incidentally find your ADD symptoms improve significantly also: my depression did too.
