Hello, I'm new here and I hope it's okay to ask on behalf of my mum...my mum has had diabetes for over 30 years and her kidney has been leaking protein for years, after blood tests she has now been told its slightly worse. Is this serious? Does anyone else suffer with this? Any advice or info you can give me would be much appreciated, many thanks

Hi @Miss316

I have also had diabetes for 30 years. I had leaky protein in my early twenties, that was brought on in pregnancy and pre eclampsia. However it never disappeared after the pregnancies. And it has progressed in to kidney disease. The protein and ckd for me however was first detected when I was 21 and am now 35, so it has been a slow progression but I am now at stage 4 kidney disease. It is important for your mum to control high bg but equally as important for her to control high blood pressure too. I reduced my HBA1c quiet drastically - but I have struggled with erratic spikes and then drops - which don't help. And to this day I still struggle with these peaks!
Good luck to your mum

At DX I was spilling albumin into my urine. I was put on lisinopril for awhile and it stopped. But controlling bs is utmost important.

Bs is blood sugar.
I'm taking several different tablets and have to watch what I eat.
My kidney function is at 20% they usually get u prepared for dialysis at around 15%
Then u have the option to go on the transplant list. I live a normal life, I get symptoms such as severe fatigue and itchy skin and sometimes a bit of swelling. But other than that I'm ok.
As the specialist told me - it's not a death sentence it is treatable, and there are always improvements. If your mums function has dropped, they are likely to put her on an ACE inhibitor which slows down progression.

Is it true we can survive with one kidney? My sister had one kidney removed many years ago. Now her second and only kidney is giving her trouble. I am really worried for her.

Yes u can live with only one kidney. It depends what sort of trouble u mean (when u say her only kidney is giving her trouble) has her function dropped and creatine levels Risen? There are lots of thing a they test for to establish kidney disease. U can live without even knowing u have it for many years, and have no symptoms. It's not until u reach the final stages it becomes problematic. However, it is important to know if there are signs of kidney disease so the doctors can try and slow down or even stop progression in to kidney failure.
I have spoken to people that have only 8% of kidney function left, and they are still doing ok with dialysis to help them.

Her remaining kidney has only 50% functionality left. She is on doctor's watch and hopefully will not need dialysis down the road, thanks for your response.
