Had my repeat HbA1c bloods taken last week and get the results back Wednesday. Whilst waiting for the day to arrive I got a letter today saying I have to go for an ultra sound scan of my liver due to abnormal results on the original and repeat blood tests for my liver function. Hoping this is nothing to worry about as have been unable to find out what the results mean. Just needed to share cos am worried now....:(

Thanks Ally....receptionist couldn't give me any information....just that the bloods had shown up abnormal results so doctor has asked for a scan. Waiting for appointment for that now and hopefully might find out more when I get results from the nurse on Wednesday afternoon. Was so hoping for some good news so hoping that at least my HbA1c comes back better than it was

I had to go for a liver US when diagnosed with T2D as the blood tests showed some abnormalities. The US, about 6 weeks later, showed that I had a fatty liver - which was not a big surprise as the rest of me was/is quite fatty too! (Was almost 40 BMI at diagnosis, happily down to 34 at the mo).
I hope your test is as uneventful as mine was!

Thank you....the highest my BMI has ever been is 25.1 and it has dropped considerably in the last 3 months. Hope my results come back clear....got more than enough to cope with right now with diabetes and dentists :( Good to hear your tests came back okay....cheered me up a little :)

I had the test about 4 years ago and it showed I had a fatty liver but not cirrhosis. Pre diabetics are prone to it and it causes the liver and pancreas not to work too well and diabetes can be the outcome. If it isn't cirrhosis then losing weight will cure it.

Well I don't drink ...never have....and have never been over weight so no clue at the moment. I have lost 24 pounds in 3 months and struggling now to keep weight on me...I wasn't over weight to start with incidentally. Fatty liver could be the reason ...not sure how that happens but am just hoping it is something simple. Losing so much weight should fix any fatty problems as I don't have an ounce of fat on me now lol. Fingers crossed I will find out more tomorrow when I get the official blood results. If my HbA1c hasn't come down I will probably throw myself off a bridge cos I have tried so damned hard for the last 3 months

I had exactly the same experience - one of my protein levels was slightly raised on initial diagnosis.

I was sent to haematologist first, who said "probably nothing to worry about but you ought to go for a liver scan, then maybe see a liver specialist if anything shows up"

Scan itself was totally non-eventful, but sure enough I then got a letter to go see a Liver man.

He said "probably nothing to worry about, one of your protein levels is a bit higher than it should - normal is 40, yours is 52, but I have seen people with levels of over 10,000. However, your liver is a bit "bright" so come back in 6 months or so."

I admit I do drink, and considerably more than the recommended levels, which is probably the root cause.

Repeat visit was yesterday when protein level has dropped tp 49, still a bit high but nothing to worry about...

I get to go back again in another 8 months

'Fatty Liver' is the theory behind the Newcastle Diet.

Prof Taylor believes BMI isn't an indication of visceral fat, so it sounds like your GP is very clued up.
It's also not particularly hard to fix normally, and gives good results, depending on your personal 'fat threshold'

You don't have to be overweight to have a fatty liver, I have a fatty liver since I can remember, so does my brother who is slim and tall and now showing signs of rising BGs... I lost track of how many times in my life I was asked if I drank too much (at the time I was a T total...)...

Low carbing and metformin had helped me before with the fatty liver... getting out of low carb and I go back to square one... that's life to me...

I know a lot of people including me gets great results while low carbing without taking medicines, but in my personal case, metformin has helped me in other areas (like the fatty liver and hormonal imbalances)

I normally don't advocate using meds, neither I am suggesting you to take them or even consider them, but I know from personal experience that I am in a much better place taking metformin than not taking it.

Something to read about metformin and fatty liver:

Thank you for that.....I am in such a mess right now. Get my results tomorrow and have the scan hanging over me which is worrying to say the least. Hormones are shot to hell and suffering badly because of it and now bg has shot up so all in all some good news re my tests can't come soon enough. Lost too much weight already and struggling to keep it up and food is becoming a nightmare. I was happily getting on quite well having Lidl High Protein rolls for lunch but have now started experiencing blazing hot sweats and other symptoms that point to eostrogen dominance....possibly caused by the soya content of the Lidl rolls so I have had to stop eating them for now to test out if they are indeed the cause as I suspect. Tried 2 tiny slices of wholewheat bread as a substitue and my bg has shot up after an hour and risen even higher after 2 hours. Life right now as a diabetic is getting pretty miserable :(

Fatty liver has nothing to do with weight and cirrhosis is not just alcohol related, Blood test may have shown high triglycerides which is an indication of a fatty liver, scan will show if liver is enlarged. Fat on the liver can cause scar tissue that leads to cirrhosis, Hepatitis, cystic fibrosis, diabetes can all cause this to happen. A change in diet can help.

@SunnyExpat So clued up he told me to go home after my initial test results, eat broccoli an drink a glass of wine ! I am getting no help or information at all from my GP. He told me my nurse doesn't know what she is talking about and to 'please myself' about having repeat blood checks!! My blood test originally also showed up a ''marker'' that needed investigating as it indicated some kind of infection going on...when I asked my gp he said ''marker?...what marker?...oh forget about that''. I rest my case :(

Don't over worry though, I perfectly understand what you are talking about, definitely this isn't an easy ride. Wait for your test results and try to relax a bit. I guess it is all a matter of finding the right balance (easier said than done I know...).

I don't touch bread, and yes the lidl rolls to me sound too good to be true, I tried them and liked them and no spike, but I thought they are good as a treat rather than as part of my daily routine.

Yes....the rolls are lovely BUT the high soya content may certainly be responsible for the hormonal problems I am having. Add that to the scan, the results tomorrow and the dentist on Thursday...along with high bg today and I am one stressed out bunny :bigtears: Hopefully tomorrow will bring some better news to cheer me up a bit cos right now I am losing the will to live
