My fasting BG this morning was...

...4.8!!!

That's the best it's been for bl**dy ages!!! It was 5.3 before bed, and I injected 40units of Insulatard before bed. (I was surprised at how low my BG was before bed AND in the morning - I was nibbling on cheese and pepperami's last night before bed! Brie, and Wensleydale w/Cranberries in it.)

My midday reading (today) was 5.3 - up a little since waking, but I can live with that! I didn't take any oral medication (usually gliclazide) with my lunch (packet of ham, packet of pastrami, and a handful of walnuts) today, so my +2hr reading will be an interesting one...

Starting Jan 4th this year, I've attacked my T2 with a vengance! Back on The Atkins Induction (I've been very strict!) and I'm gonna stick at it for as long as possible. They usually recommend a fortnight, but I'll keep at it for as long as I can manage. I'll gradually start introducing veggies once I'm sick of protein, eggs and cheese! That won't happen any time soon, though (I got a cast iron griddle pan for Christmas - my steaks are as good as any I've had in a restaurant!)

Basically, to get my BG down, all I've eaten for the last week and a half, is sandwich meat (sliced ham/chicken/turkey/pastrami, etc...) for lunch, then a nice Rump Steak or some stir fried fish/prawns for dinner. Like I said before, snacking on cheese and pepperami/sliced meats when necessary.

I've discovered River Cobler at Tesco £2 for 2 large fillets, and have been slicing it short ways and stir frying with chilli and garlic oil, then splashing in a little soy sauce for the last minute. Bl**dy lovely.

First couple of days were not great - suffered the common headaches (my own fault, as I didn't drink enough water). But after the last of my carb reserves were used up I felt great.

I'm quietly confident that I'll be able to do without the insulatard in the near future - but that will depend on whether or not DP strikes!!!

Roll on the weight loss!

Hi Patch, your profile says you on oral meds, if you are now taking insulin I would respectfully suggest that it may not be a good idea to aim quite so low as the dangers of a night time hypo are very real.

When I was on insulin I had an hb a1c of 5.1 and my diabetes nurse went mental, well OK not exactly mental but she did suggest that 5.1% really wasn't such a good idea.

I know your dead set on a low carb future but it might be advisable to eat some low gi carbs before bed, just to be on the safe side.

You can flame me if you like Patch but I am only giving my opinion, not trying to tell you what to eat.

Appreciate the input Sid - and it's a very real concern of mine. (And thanks for the heads-up - I've changed my profile). I've already raised it with the Diabetic Specialist, and she said that as Insulatard (the tard is short for "tardy") is a very slow acting insulin, it is unlikely that I will go hypo overnight.

As a T2, I've never had a hypo before - would it be beneficial to experience one so that I'd recognise the signs? Obviously, I would not aim for a hypo by not eating, or increasing my dose of Insulatard, but if a hypo was to happen further down the line it might be a good learning experience for me. I've made my missus aware that it might happen when I started taking Insulatard.

P.S - my +2hr reading today was 6.4. 1hr later it was 6.3. Everything is looking rosy! :D

Like I said before - the aim is to come off insulin altogether, then I can rest easy with no fear of hypo's. I'll not be rushing into it, though.

I'm pleased you're happy with your results, Patch. Don't forget you can eat veg on Atkins Induction - I've listed the quantities on my Viv's Diet post, which is pretty well taken from Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution. As a new Type 2 I'm hoping it sorts me out as well - doing nicely at the moment!

Before bed last night: 5.3
Upon waking this morning: 4.4!

BG <7mmol/l all day yesterday. :D

Rump steak and mushrooms for dinner last night, and a couple of small pieces of cheese and a pepperami for supper.

No gliclazide yesterday, 40units of Insulatard before bed...

Lunch today is sliced ham & sliced chicken. Dinner will be Stir Fried River Cobler with King Prawns. Supper will be the same as yesterday (if I fancy a snack...)

This is going surprisingly well!

[EDIT: Before lunch today: 4.8
2hrs after lunch: 6.0

Lunch today was 125g of Ham, 125g of chicken, handful of walnuts, and a meat salad pot from Lidl (luncheon meat with ghurkins in mayonaisse). Usually wouldn't have the meat salad - but I was hungry.

Again - no Gliclazide today. Change of 1.2 over 2hrs is GREAT. HOPEFULLY, the fat in the meat salad hasn't just slowed down the absorbtion. Nothing another test won't rule out!]

Before bed last night: 6.8
Fasting this morning: 4.8!
Before lunch: 5.1
After lunch: TBA

This is still with 40units of Insulatard before bed. Starting on Monday, I'm going to reduce the Insulard by 4units each night, and check my fasting BG's in relation to the drop in dosage.

Dinner last night was stir fried river cobler with a few slices of fried black pudding. I thought the black pudding was a bit risky (but it was on offer and I couldn't resist!), and I'll be limiting it more now that I know it pushed my BG up more than it has been going post meal.

Supper last night (about 10:15'ish) was a large handful of salted pecans, a pepperami, and a couple of pieces of brie.

Still OFF the Gliclazide. 8)
