Hi all....I am a newcomer to this forum. My son 11 years of age has just been diagnosed with T1D 2 days ago. I appreciate your help to guide me to review research and get used to your technical discussions... I am finding it quite complicated to understand how to behave and afraid of such responsibility when he is released from hospital

Hi ACMLT,

I imagine that having a T1 child is daunting and has come as a shock to you, but the condition is quite manageable with the right approach and you can get a lot of advice on here, so firstly "don't panic!".

Do you know if your hospital has an Endocrine centre - if so, your son will be under the supervision of a specialist team and you'll get a lot of support from them regards treatment and diet etc. You should also find in these modern times that your GP has a specialist Diabetes Nurse and that you'll get regular appointments for checkups.

Have a good look around the forums as there's loads of information available - good luck and don't hesitate to ask questions about medications or anything, there are lots of knowledgeable people around.

Hi ACMLT

I am new to this as well! My daughter also 11 was diagnosed type 1 on 03/05/15. It was very scary bringing her home, it was that overwhelming feeling when you bring your baby home for the first time!

We are now almost 7 weeks down the line and it is now starting to become part of the normal routine. I didn't think I would ever cope but I am. It is a lot of hard work and we are all still coming to terms with this huge change.

We are very lucky the diabetes team at the sick kids in Edinburgh have been fantastic. Which I think has made all the difference! Take all the support you can and don't be afraid of asking silly questions (I do all the time!).
