Would love to start a family but have it 12 years I'm 27... I had laser for severe retinopathy a month ago and have a blurry eye since then and have to get more laser on Monday I'm so frightened. My eye was perfect vision before it, Having complications this severe so young am I ever going to be able to have a family it seems so risky to have a child when I already have complications. Hba1c was over 100 now it's 84 I'm trying my best but also if I'm too good my retinopathy gets worse.. I'm so scared . Wanted to try for kid soon but seems next to impossible

Should you only try if your a no complication and always had control

There are other ladies here who've had eye problems and got pregnant still @sarahm723

Perhaps you could speak to your consultant for advice after your eyes have settled?

You'd have to make sure you had the support you needed to get your HbA1C down slowly and carefully.

Retinopathy doesn't create a prohibition on pregnancy, nor do the retinopathy treatments.

There is some risk that pregnancy can cause progression of retinopathy, especially hypertension or pre eclampsia during pregnancy.

The best thing to do to stop retinopathy progressing is to control your blood sugar, and this fits in with the demands for tight blood sugar control during pregnancy. The target hba1c for ladies trying to conceive is 6.1%.

However, sudden tight blood sugar control can in fact have an adverse impact on retinopathy, so it's important to gradually improve blood sugar control under guidance of your healthcare team.

@sarahm723 As I've mentioned, there are ladies here who have have varying degrees of retinopathy and have had a baby. Bear in mind they might take a while to,reply as they could be busy with family or infrequent visitors to the forum.

The best thing to do, in my opinion, is to get your current eye problems dealt with; speak to your eye specialist about pregnancy and get their advice; also get their advice about supoort in lowering your blood sugar slowly so,it doesn't hurt your eyes.

Once you have a plan with the help of your specialists, then ask about a pre-conception clinic.

Nobody can predict how pregnancy will affect your eyes, but your specialists will be best placed to,give you an idea.

I'd also speak to,your DSN so they know your plans and can give you as much supoort as you need in gradually reducing your blood sugars. For example, you might be able to get regular appointments to help you. You could also ask about things like a pump to,see if that would help you gradually gain the control you need to,be pregnant.
