I have been taking metformin for some years with no apparaent side effects. Rcently I have been suffering stomach problems-nausea, bloating, stomach ache and constipation.
In trying to fing out why I wondered if Metformin side efects could kick in even if one has taken them for a long time.

my complete lack of motivation about anything.
I don't know about side effects after years, but i switched to slow release metform after getting similar symptoms with the regular metformin. If it was me, i'd go off it for a while and see if i feel any different...but just go and see the GP and discuss first obviously.

Not being able to satisfy my craving for chocolate LOL
I've been on metformin only since about May/June, but I am having the same symptoms as you are. I find eating more fiber, in conjunction with some Fibrogel once a day does away with the discomfort of feeling bloated and constipated. I feel so much better now. But do talk to your GP first before you fiddle around with your medication :)

soaps on telly and people talking about the characters as if they were real.
After 8 years on it, I've never had any trouble with Metformin, but then I'm on a low dose.
You could try changing WHEN you take yours. With meals seems to be most tolerable. Whatever you do now, try tweaking it

Like you I had been taking metformin for years without any side effects and good blood sugar control but then started to get the side effects you mention alongside diarrhoea so bad it caused incontinence on several occasions - not only embarrassing but totally shook my self confidence as regards leaving the house. I spoke to my gp and asked to be referred to the diabetes specialist who after several trials involving other medication in tablet form has now prescribed byetta injections for me and I am hoping this will be the answer. So my advice would be to go along and see your gp and see what he says - you may have become 'immune' to the metformin and need to change your medication although this of course could lead to another set of side effects until you find what works for you.
