Hi there , I'm new to this forum, only used it twice so far and not really sure if this is the right board as there's so many!
Just wanted to introduce myself in the hope of getting to know others going through similar things as this is a very challenging illness & although my family are loving & try to be understanding about it all, it's new to them too & prob just as tough to take & the subject is danced around often..
I was being diagnosed for something else in hospital when the doctors noticed my BS was high on further analysis they concluded I was a type 2 diabetic but they hadn't done the confirmation test ( forgot the name think it's anti gada) but a friend of mine that works as a nurse had said that she thought I was diabetic and when I had told her what they had thought she urged me to get the test that determines for sure which type u are..so I did & received a call saying they had made a mistake regarding the type 2.... Now keep in mind they had given me metaformin had me on a waiting list to se a dietician etc . So I was in shock to then discover I was TYPE 1 at the age of 34?? I thought they had made a mistake as you always here about type 1 when people are children etc .
So that was nearly 2 years who & I'm still not stable & I am very frustrated and my blood sugar is constantly high & I have had several hypo attacks during the night which is horrible ....on top of this I have suffered from back & nerve pain which I have just posted about.
I feel very unstable with regards to my health & I'm weak / tired all the time, very sleep deprived due to feeling constantly sore especially ATM as I'm suffering from a slipped disk, so would love to talk to anyone to share stories with and help me feel more connected..

Thanks all

Beth

I just joined yesterday. I'm T2. But have heard that you can become insulin dependant. You must be really peeved at the mid-diagnosis... Chin up as they say. I've been in denial for a long time with mine because I didn't want to be diabetic. But I'm determined to try this LCHF everyone on here talks about. My doc says I don't need to do tests so no script for machine and test strips. But most on here seem to think it's important so I'm off to see doc next week.
Good luck navigating you're way around. I couldn't figure out how to start a forum so I put my blurb up on general. But it came up as a reply to someone else's Q. KR

Hi and welcome. Yes the oldest T1 recorded is age 90 at diagnosis! Mis-diagnosis is common as I can confirm. What insulin regime are you on i.e. Basal/Bolus or mixed? Are you having a low-carb diet?

Hi @saintly1

Welcome to the forum! Wow, you must feel very frustrated about the mis-diagnosis, but thank goodness your friend noticed and urged you to have the test.

When you say you're running on high, what is your average reading would you say?

What is your isulin regime and are you carb counting?

Happy New Year! xxx

Hello,

Welcome to the type 1 squad.

I joined the forum like 5 minutes ago and was diagnosed as Type 1 in 2014 at 46. I was initially diagnosed like you as type 2, and handed metaformin tablets by a GP and then subsequently told to throw them away a week later upon seeing a specialist. I'm not as stable as I want to be (in 2015 I had 65% of readings in the normal 4-8mmol/l range).

As a minerals scientist (so I love crunching numbers) and I find the concept of monitoring insulin levels with carbohydrate load, limiting sugar intake and measuring exercise parameters interesting, and I get to role play as the guinea pig/crash test dummy. I don't wish it to be a life long experiment, but I'm in for the long haul, and have joined the site to learn more from others and the forum.

Happy New Year to all.

Rich
