Vomiting and diarrhea attacks

I've been getting acute attacks for several years now but they are getting more frequent. I suspect I've got gastroparesis but the doctors are reluctant to commit to this. I've had various tests including scan and endoscopy but not much found apart from hiatus hernia. I was diagnosed with type 2 14 years ago and have tried many different medications over the years, but never achieved very good blood sugars. Do other people get these attacks and how do you cope with them.

Inbetween times are your bowel actions normalised?

Have you tried removing certain foods out of your diet?

My bowels are loose most days , but manageable. When I get a d&v attack I'm going at both ends at once for several hours. I end up dehydrated and very weak and ache.
I'm not sure what a shapes test is?

You swallow 1 capsule of 20 small shapes over 3 days. 3 dsys later you would go for an xray to see hiw many shapes have come out and where they are.
Gastroparesis is more likely to be considered if you have absolutely disgusting constipation needing ambulances and hospital assistance.....and self administered enemas constantly. When you have gastrparesis or slow colonic transit your food stays stuck moving very little and does not expel easily...

Have you tried eliminating certain foods from your diet ie breads?

You say your bloods have never achieved very good levels... This too may be because the foods you eat are not balanced with your body and meds intake.

I doubt if you have gastroparesis.

I have bad gas periodically and I get a slight attack of the diarrhea sometimes. The worst part about it is that it sometimes happens to me when I'm sleeping and I wake up hanging my head in shame. I've done all I can to keep my blood glucose normal and eat a healthy balance of foods. I find that eating too much food, eating fried foods or days-old food potentially upset my stomach, so I avoid doing that.

Have you seena gastroenterologist?

Thats unlikely to be related to blood levels but needs to investigated. My mum found similar (non diabetic) experiences but was related to orange juice and other fruit.

I spoke to a doctor at a local clinic last year and I think the doctor gave the diagnosis that he believed I had a slight case of Irritable Bowel Syndrome and that I should keep my sugar levels normal to avoid the symptoms. But due to having some diarrhea issues and delayed digestions associated with gastroparesis, I think I have a slight case of that too. I haven't taken it any further than the clinic to be honest and I'm thinking that maybe I should just to be safe.

I would to be honest with just an explanation to the GP that it is not normal for a person to experience this and asking for a gastro referral.
I did this and paid privately myself for the appointment to see the gastro person that had most interests. (Googled all local gastroenterologists on gmc website and then looked up all the gastro people online). Found one that really did specialise and went for appt as private but he put me on waiting list for NHS to have the tests done. The chap I saw admitted that my symptoms if I was not diabetic would have just been listed as IBS. He did recognise that I needed a shapes test. Every other test came back as ok besides that shapes test which showed my stomach was not pushing through the food.. (Slow colonic transit).
It is best to get checked out... And to ask for a referral to a consultant that specialises and deals with stomachs and bowels all day long rather than a GP that really only generally practices medicine.

Hi @TPhoenix

Yep, please get that checked. Might be a simple solution but I'd get that looked into. Do NOT ever feel ashamed .... you showed guts posting that so I really hope you get it sorted.

Mike :)

You are a young guy too so make an appt and ask to be referred.
When instances like you described occur do note down what foods you ate in the 48 hours before hand and take the list to the specialist. They need as mych info as possible.

Hi - I suffer from this. I get bouts of acute stomach ache accompanied by severe diarrhoea. I have suffered from loose stools for a few years and was diagnosed with suspected autonomic neuropathy. However, as with UKApril the Doctor was not committed to this and I later found that he actually suggested it was a a mix or autonomic neuropathy and IBS. I have been T1 for 34 years.

I have Gastroparesis and yes I get nasty bouts of vomiting or diahrrea see for a test that you swallow porridge or egg and they see how slowly you digest this it's all rather nasty when I'm ill and I always end up in hospital, I have had so many incidences projectile vomit in my car, in marks & Spencers, I never know when it's going to happen but am learning to spot the signs. If I can help let me know oh and I have had my spleen removed as well so I'm on antibiotics twice a day
