Why are sugars high in the morning?

Been trying to get a handle on my blood sugar... Been testing and tracking it daily for the past 2 months.

I've managed to get the sugars to around 5 and 6.8 on evenings (2 hours after food) by doing exercise and watching what I eat.
But what I don't understand is, that my morning readings before breakfast are in the range of 7.5 - 9.3 every morning.

If I've gotten my sugar down before I go to sleep, can anyone explain why my reading are back up by the morning? Surely the blood sugars should be going down after my evening reading, so why are they pushing back up overnight?

So for example. last few blood sugar readings.

Evening (2 hours after food) Morning (Before Breakfast)
6.5 8.3
4.7 7.2
6.8 7.8

Thanks in advance.

I do exactly the same. Doesn't help that things are very stressful at present and I am waking early and lying there, fretting and imagining a cartoon-like picture of cortisol squirting into my blood.

I have the same problem, the highest readings I get are in the morning (I'm not on medication yet, just diet) The Dawn Phenomenon makes sense.
