Diet drinks - the artificial sweeteners taste vile.
Having to forswear foods I have loved all my life.
Trying to find low carb meals when eating out.
Not the usual message, but my latest HbA1c is 6.2 which is in the pre-diabetic range and not far off the 6.0 or lower which is non-diabetic (or very strongly controlled diabetic).

Three months ago I would have qualified as T2 with an HbA1c of 7.3.
Since then I have lost nearly a stone, and I am working my way down towards the middle of the 'good' BMI range although the last 5 lbs is proving a monumental struggle.

So diet and exercise rule :)

So if I keep my act together and keep trimming the weight and stay off the carbs I could be hitting non-diabetic numbers.

It would be nice to pass a glucose tolerance test but I have to be realistic - and improvement of 1.1 in HbA1c is a major step forward.

So forward, pre-diabetics - you have only your weight to lose!
[With apologies to anyone who is pre-diabetic but has a BMI at or below the mid point of 'good'.]

Cheers

Thanks for all the good wishes.

A big High Five for Professor Taylor who showed me that there was somewhere to go even if you were 'normal' BMI:cool:

Most certainly does. I got into mountain biking on holiday and was always between 4.6 and 4.9 the morning after a day out on a bike. Even when I did something else and ate things like Apfelstrudel, I woudn't go above 5.8.

I avoided routes with names like Harakiri and stuck to the easy routes with not too much up and down and nice big wide tracks, but it all helps. There's nothing wrong with just taking things easily. It is still far far better than doing nothing at all.

There's a lot on my doorstep too, in the Dales. There is a world out there just waiting to be seen.

Getting old and everything that goes with it. All the repeats on TV. The drongos who ring me up to sell me things. Religious havens for pedophiles and war-mongers.

Congratz on the weight loss but you are very high normal.

Inferential testing can be a problem - inferential testing is when we test for something and call it (infer) something else. When we become familiar with it we forget it is inferential and not the real thing. HbA1C infers a 3 month average blood sugar, but while we are high we are doing damage.

The relationship between HbA1C and finger pricking BS test is not equal. My last HbA1C was 6.3 and that my specialist told me equals about 8 or 9 on my BS meter. The two scales are close at the bottom end but they separate as they get higher. Which leads us to a false sense of security, Our labs, he said, are about to start reporting HbA1C in a different % scale so my reading of 6.3 will be about 48 on the new scale.

I am off carbs on specialist advice and as a direct result I am off insulin (after 10 years). Carbs trigger Blood sugar rise and all diabetics have their own tolerance level. If you can find your tolerance level for carbs and stay below it your BS will improve.

Hi Scanchic. Yes thanks. Trying to keep the old bones moving and stop them seizing up. Hills and mountains are always visually interesting. The cycling is just the method of getting outside amongst them. I can walk better now but the arthritis still plays up after a couple of hours and makes the rest of the day painful. Cycling has less impact, though it is hard on my rear end! I think any excuse to get outside in the fresh air and just move around is of help. I don't know where you live or what it is like but we are lucky here as we have several national parks, Dales, Peak, Snowdonia, Lakes and North York Moors all within an hour or two. There is a lot on the web for local walks and rides., eg The Walking Englishman, also available for scandichics, though you may find Nordic Walking more in character. Still, the claimed improvements are impressive:

  • Heart Disease and Strokes
  • High Blood pressure
  • Diabetes (type 2)
  • Bowel Cancer
  • Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis
  • Stress and Anxiety
  • Obesity

I got my poles from Aldi for around a fiver each and I built my bike around a Trek frame I got off ebay for £23. No need to pay the silly money that fashion wants you to.
