Re: Would you prefer to be on insulin injections or on a pum

Hi my name is Ashley I'm 17 and I got diagnosed with type one diabetes when I was two... I was on injections all my life until my diabetic nurse introduced me with the insulin pump!:') I though why not? A few months it was going great, then I got sick!Sick of wearing baggy clothes to hide it, sick of people staring at me and strangers asking questions. I also kept pulling the canula out all the time which really hurt sometimes! I though if I was to ever wanted to get a boyfriend I couldn't because I had this big machine attached to my side! I got bullied at school, getting called a robotic freak. So I stopped caring and started forgetting to do my insulin! So I went into hospital with my bloods been 56.0! I was ill and that's when I came off it and went back on injections where my bloods are perfect I carb count which is great!:')

Re: Would you prefer to be on insulin injections or on a pum

I am unsure whether a pump would suit me or not , I currently take 3 fast acting injections and a long lasting every day, I work in a fast food restaurant where there is a lot of banging into each other and a lot of hours means the hba1c isn't where I needs to be I believe I would benefit from a pump but unsure whether it would be safe in the environment I work any one have any thoughts ?

I prefer injections - have been offered a pump but just dont like things being attached to me as I'm quite petite and still active. I'm happy to inject when I need to, taking around 5 - 6 jabs a day of minute doses of insulin, thats fine with me.

Type 1 for over 25 yrs Injections for 24 yrs and Medtronic Insulin Pump for 18 months
My HbA1C Has never been so BAD On the last 10yrs off Injections ranged from 6.8-7.9
I have suffered a lot of stress in the last 2 years and believe more than anything that this has caused the flutuation in Blood Sugar Control
My HbA1C has been over the last 18 months has been 7.9-8.4
So the Pump has not helped my Fluctuation In Blood Sugar Control
But the Flexability and ease of use of the Pump Has Been Excellent and I have never thought of going back on MDI
24yrs MDI 5 out of 10
Nearly 2yrs on Pump 8 out of 10

GREAT GO 4 IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Re: Would you prefer to be on insulin injections or on a pum

I'm on a pump and have been for over nine years. It was the best thing I have ever done. Quality of life changed, energy went up. My doctor was pushing me for years, but I didn't want to be attached to something all the time. I was always a brittle diabetic since I was diagnosed at three. When I got pregnant my numbers were all over from 25 to 400 within an hour. It was the only way to stabilize. In the US a pump can run between 3000 and 7000 US dollers. Thank God my insurance covers the cost. Changed my life, I'll never let it go. ;-)

my son is now 16 and has been type 1 for 3 years. At first we found that getting control was fairly easy but as he got older and puberty set in the hormone surges caused so many problems his HBA1C went from 5.4 to 9.4 . He is very active and dances a lot which is also difficult on MDI . Eventually we insisted that he had a pump and we would fund it ourselves. The pump cost would be £2500 with £75 to £150 a month running costs. Our consultant changed and he got the offer of a pump on the nhs. He has had it for a year now and wouldnt give it back. He didnt want to have it attached all the time but now finds it better. It looks like a pager and works from a test meter so he can inject without people knowing. Hyops are easier to handle and when he is active we can turn the pump down quickly . In fact when he has tap dance he takes the pump off and has a snack he will then come out of the session with levels in the 6's. Was it the right decision to want a pump? Yes . You can try it and if you dont like it you can go back to MDI.

I go on to a pump on 19th November and I can't wait. 5 injections a day, inflexible mealtimes, ridiculous highs and lows. I just hope my dream comes true with the pump...... Roll on 19th November

Re: Would you prefer to be on insulin injections or on a pum

after my daughter was diagnosed t1 at just 13 months old we got stuck in doing injections... unfortunately her levels havent settled at all... nearly 6 months on we r still in the same situation. bloods are randomly reading HI or canbe as low as 1.1... i test regularly and stick to a very strict routine and diet with her but still no joy.

At our last clinic we moved onto the pump reader and fingers crossed will be fully set up on the pump soon!! i have heard great things about the pump and i am excited to get my daughter back to herself again.

Re: Would you prefer to be on insulin injections or on a pum

I have been type 1 for 29 years, since I was 6 and on an omnipod pump for 6 months now. It has changed my life! I wouldn't never go back to needles and if I had a child with T1 I would insist on pump therapy, no question!

Re: Would you prefer to be on insulin injections or on a pum

Ive been diabetic for 7 years now and my levels are all over the place, slowly getting better but 2 years ago my HBA1C was 17 so plenty of room for improvement.
I dont like injecting but I hate the idea of having a needle inside me constantly, whenever I'm in hospital the drips always get caught and fall out and I bleed everyehere so i'd be worried that the pump would somehow fall out while I'm asleep or partly come loose then I'd have to pull it out etc etc
I think theres just too much to go wrong with the pump whereas the injections are quick and relatively easy, being so skinny I get a lot of bruises but its a small price to pay to be alive.

I have an average HBA1C of 18%, however I have not been recommended nor a mention of it from my GP or diabetic specialists.

Re: Would you prefer to be on insulin injections or on a pum

Hi I have been type 1 for 20 years, and not been great at doing blood sugars etc but kept fairly in control my daughter is 4 but the last year I seem not to be able to control my levels most off the time I am up in the late 20's trying to lose weight (5 stone so far) and they have mention the pump but just want to know your feelings on it? I am tablets as well due to insulin resistance and take 5 injections a day and take loads of insulin!! any advice would be great as feeling so yuck all the time, hard to explain to a loved one. thanks Charlotte

There is no way I could stand to have a needle in me all the time

I also would not like having equipment attched to me at all times too.

Pen injections are no hardship and much easier to rotate the sites, do not get scar tissue with pen injections

Re: Would you prefer to be on insulin injections or on a pum

Not sure, I have been T1 since 1986 and for the last 15 years my control has been hit and miss. I am super-sensitive to Lantus, so have to run my sugars higher than I would like. My consultant has recommended that I go on a pump as a matter of urgency, so I will be getting my pump in 2 weeks' time.

I have done quite a bit of research and I hope it will change my life!

Re: Would you prefer to be on insulin injections or on a pum

I'm a type 1 diabetic and also live in the West Midlands. My diabetic clinic are trying to get us all to use insulin pumps.I am interested in swopping over as my control and hypo awareness is not good. Yes the pumps are expensive but will pay for themselves over a couple of years as no pens, night time insulin and less testing strips will be used.
