awww ... how awful for you.

I think you need to go back to your doctor and find out more info. The more information you have, the better you can decide how to go forward.

I cannot do without porridge a few days a week.

I am sure somebody will be along soon to tag @daisy1 who will provide you with loads of info and links. You are not alone :)

Welcome :)

Hi @sweetyfi , welcome to the forums.

It is common for T2's not to be given a meter and test strips. If you can afford to self fund these items then it will be worth it in the long run. Sometimes you can get a meter for free as the companies make plenty of money on the test strips.

As for your food, it seems like you're on the right lines if you're trying to go low carb', but Coke Life is not sugar free (maybe you know that already.)

Sounds like you need to have a good read through the forum before committing to buying more things that you don't need.

Remember that for a typical T2D exercise will do just as much good as a change of diet. So balance it. Eat well on days where you're typically inactive and have the 'odd' treat on days where you've exercised.

The Internet is your friend for free advice. There's no need to buy special diabetic food. It's all a moneymaking gimmick.

All the best,
Grant

One good thing I was told when I was diagnosed was never eat diabetic foods. They are over priced and give you diarrhea. It was actually in a booklet I was given.

Basically, as an unmedicated Type 2 you need to formulate a diet based round as few carbs as you can. The main ones to reduce or eliminate are rice, potatoes, bread, pasta, cereals and anything made with or containing flour. This includes wholemeal foods. We also need to be careful with fruit and milk.. If you intend to low carb, have a look at these

http://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/a-new-low-carb-guide-for-beginners.68695/

http://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/60-seconds

Your next buy should be a meter. Many of here use the Codefree because it has the cheapest strips. Beware of free meters as their strips can be very expensive. The cost of the strips is far more important than the cost of the meter because we need a lot of strips and only one meter.

Try here for the Codefree meter
http://homehealth-uk.com/product-category/blood-glucose/blood-glucose-monitor/

and here for the extra strips
http://homehealth-uk.com/all-products/sd-codefree-test-strips-to-be-used-only-with-the-sd-monitor/

Pharmacies don't sell them. There are discount codes if you buy in bulk and remember to declare you are diabetic as you don't pay the VAT.

Good for you you have started well by lowering your carbs whatever you have cut out or lowered will help you a lot We can't tell you what you can or can't eat as we are all different for instance some can eat porridge without problem and some can eat rice and potatoes in small portions and some do not

@sweetyfi

Hello and welcome to the forum :) Here is the information we give to new members and I hope you will find it useful. This should help you with your diet choices and basically you need to restrict the carbs as much as possible to keep your levels under control. Ask as many questions as you need to and someone will be able to help.

BASIC INFORMATION FOR NEWLY DIAGNOSED DIABETICS

Diabetes is the general term to describe people who have blood that is sweeter than normal. A number of different types of diabetes exist.

A diagnosis of diabetes tends to be a big shock for most of us. It’s far from the end of the world though and on this forum you’ll find over 150,000 people who are demonstrating this.

On the forum we have found that with the number of new people being diagnosed with diabetes each day, sometimes the NHS is not being able to give all the advice it would perhaps like to deliver - particularly with regards to people with type 2 diabetes.

The role of carbohydrate

Carbohydrates are a factor in diabetes because they ultimately break down into sugar (glucose) within our blood. We then need enough insulin to either convert the blood sugar into energy for our body, or to store the blood sugar as body fat.

If the amount of carbohydrate we take in is more than our body’s own (or injected) insulin can cope with, then our blood sugar will rise.

The bad news

Research indicates that raised blood sugar levels over a period of years can lead to organ damage, commonly referred to as diabetic complications.

The good news

People on the forum here have shown that there is plenty of opportunity to keep blood sugar levels from going too high. It’s a daily task but it’s within our reach and it’s well worth the effort.

Controlling your carbs

The info below is primarily aimed at people with type 2 diabetes, however, it may also be of benefit for other types of diabetes as well.
There are two approaches to controlling your carbs:

  • Reduce your carbohydrate intake
  • Choose ‘better’ carbohydrates

Reduce your carbohydrates

A large number of people on this forum have chosen to reduce the amount of carbohydrates they eat as they have found this to be an effective way of improving (lowering) their blood sugar levels.

The carbohydrates which tend to have the most pronounced effect on blood sugar levels tend to be starchy carbohydrates such as rice, pasta, bread, potatoes and similar root vegetables, flour based products (pastry, cakes, biscuits, battered food etc) and certain fruits.

Choosing better carbohydrates

Another option is to replace ‘white carbohydrates’ (such as white bread, white rice, white flour etc) with whole grain varieties. The idea behind having whole grain varieties is that the carbohydrates get broken down slower than the white varieties –and these are said to have a lower glycaemic index.
http://www.diabetes.co.uk/food/diabetes-and-whole-grains.html

The low glycaemic index diet is often favoured by healthcare professionals but some people with diabetes find that low GI does not help their blood sugar enough and may wish to cut out these foods altogether.

Eating what works for you

Different people respond differently to different types of food. What works for one person may not work so well for another. The best way to see which foods are working for you is to test your blood sugar with a glucose meter.

To be able to see what effect a particular type of food or meal has on your blood sugar is to do a test before the meal and then test after the meal. A test 2 hours after the meal gives a good idea of how your body has reacted to the meal.

The blood sugar ranges recommended by NICE are as follows:

Blood glucose ranges for type 2 diabetes
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 8.5 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (adults)
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 9 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (children)
  • Before meals: 4 to 8 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 10 mmol/l
However, those that are able to, may wish to keep blood sugar levels below the NICE after meal targets.

Access to blood glucose test strips

The NICE guidelines suggest that people newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes should be offered:

  • structured education to every person and/or their carer at and around the time of diagnosis, with annual reinforcement and review
  • self-monitoring of plasma glucose to a person newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes only as an integral part of his or her self-management education

Therefore both structured education and self-monitoring of blood glucose should be offered to people with type 2 diabetes. Read more on getting access to bloodglucose testing supplies.

Hi Sweetyfi, in short, your red blood cells live for about 3 months, each day some die and new ones are created. Glucose attaches itself to these cells, so the blood taken and tested will show an average over the period. What it wont show is the highs and lows, you will need a meter for that

It will have been an HbA1c test. This takes a sort of average of your blood sugar levels over the past 2 to 3 months. Your chocolate and fizzy drink will not have had effect on this, however, it won't be doing your current levels much good!

You can read about HbA1c tests here. It also explains what the targets are.

Hello @sweetyfi and Welcome to the Forum. :) A vital piece of a Diabetics equipment is a blood glucose meter. It allows us to test and see which foods raise our blood sugars and those that don't. Just take one day at a time and as others have already said, read around the threads and come back and ask questions.

shouldn't doctors automatically ,give you a tester ,i just assumed if I stay low carb on sweetners your ok, have a few sweets like 6 grams ,a roll is 11 grams, bread and wosits 9 grams,im only 10 stone ,I have to eat so I don't go to 9 or 8 stone ,because I was on 15 carbs a day I lost loads so now I eat to keep my weight at 10 stone, any way don't really understand carbs and sugar or sugar in carbs or carbs plus sugar,

or no added sugar fizzy drinks wrong as I cant eat boriing diabetic diet ,without adding 12gram evaporated milk to my tea,2g a cup, once a day, cant add up to 30 carbs a day

yes coke life is 6grams per 100ml,thats why I brought a 200ml glass, is 12 grams -to 3 teaspoons is that too much for a diabetic
because no one tells you they just say each person differs,so I rated carbs and sugar 40 grams a day,
I supoose I cant tell this until I buy a tester, anyway I'm buying one now on amazon whats the simplest

Drinking this version of 'poison' is still better than that traditional sugar variety if positive BGL control is your priority.
