Interaction of BMI with vitamin D and insulin sensitivity

December 05, 2011

Horng-Yih Ou et al. European Journal of Clinical Investigation. Doi: 10.1111/j.1365-2362.2011.02525.x

Starting from the premise that both obesity and type 2 diabetes are associated with hypovitaminosis D, the investigators looked at the impact of body mass index (BMI) status on the relationship of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) concentration with insulin sensitivity.

The authors observed stronger associations of serum 25OHD with insulin sensitivity in overweight than normal weight subjects. Also, as more than 60% of the US population is overweight, and hypovitaminosis D is highly prevalent in overweight subjects, and they posit that hypovitaminosis D has a large population attributable risk for type 2 diabetes.
