Indians High Risk Diabetes Patients

Indians are at high risk of becoming diabetics and of getting other lifestyle diseases.

This is the conclusion of a blood sample survey released in India.

The survey sample consisted of 535 women and 735 men. It revealed that Indians are more likely to get cancers, nervous and circulatory disorders, asthma, diabetes, heart problems, hypertension and obesity.

"Today's lifestyles can lead to a number of diseases, which are preventable and that is possible only through regular health check-ups," P Srinivasan, Motropolis (a diagnostic centre) medical director.

"Most people do not get themselves screened either because they are ignorant... While others prefer to stay ignorant of the state of their body," he stated.

The survey showed imcorrect lifestyles lead to diabetes and related cardio-vascular and neurological problems. It also showed that systematic health check-ups enable early diagnosis and treatment.

India has the greatest proportion of diabetic sufferers in the world, up to 30 million, and increasing day by day. Those with diabetes are two to four times more likely to develop heart disease, in comparison to those who don't have diabetes, says the study.

The World Health Organisation forecasts that by 2010 India's heart patients will reach 100 million.
