Diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease have been linked by several new studies . Apparently, type 2 diabetes can increase the risk of developing Alzheimer’s. The findings are raising concerns in the international healthcare community.
A diabetes surge, people fear, could also result in a increased incidences of Alzheimer’s. Furthermore, the results of the studies show that diabetic patients have to worry about dementia as well as the better known complications, such as heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, blindness and amputation .
The results were presented in Madrid, Spain on Sunday as part of a six-day conference held by the Alzheimer’s Association. Over 5,000 researchers from around the globe attended the conference.
Alzheimer’s is a common condition, affecting one in 10 people over the age of 65, and almost 50 per cent of over 85s. In America, the problem is large, with 4.5 million sufferers and a healthcare bill of c.$100 billion.
One professor reported "Alzheimer's is going to swamp the health-care system." Diabetes and Alzheimer’s are linked by a destructive protein called amyloid. Some researchers have even suggested that Alzheimer’s could become ‘type 3 diabetes.’
