A new study by researchers at the Finnish National Public Health Institute has found that drinking a large amount of coffee every day might reduce your chances of developing type 2 diabetes… by up to 40 per cent!
Coffee has previously been studied with reference to its effects on type 2 diabetes. However, a study of this scale has not been conducted before. The researchers analysed data from almost 12,000 women and over 10,000 men . Respondents had entered data about their diseases as well as their lifestyle and diet habits.
The lead author of the study, Gang Hu, said: “Coffee drinking was associated with a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes in both men and women, and this association was observed regardless of the levels of physical activity, BMI and alcohol consumption.”
Significant consumption of coffee (up to seven cups) was found to be particularly effective in preventing type 2 diabetes amongst the obese . However, the authors of the study, which was published in the International Journal of Obesity, agreed that much further research should be conducted.
