World Diabetes Day has been hailed as a great success. Taking place on 14th November, the international awareness event involved millions of people worldwide.
This year, world diabetes day ran under the slogan ‘Diabetes Care for Everyone.’ The aim of WDD 2006 was to raise awareness about and amongst groups in the developed and the developing world that faced problems with healthcare access.
Although celebrated on a single day, World Diabetes Day is a year-long campaign, aiming to involve the entire global diabetes community. This year, the campaign aims to highlight the fact that all diabetics deserve equal access to care, prevention and education. They also aim to draw attention to the disadvantages and the vulnerable, and their problems with accessing care.
This year, WDD also aims to increase the awareness of the assistance community throughout the world that better funding for diabetes and other non-communicable diseases is a priority. Diabetes needs better investment, and WDD makes this point clearly. WDD also encourage networks and individuals to join together in sharing awareness and promote the messages of the campaign. Their final goal is to stimulate research into the origins of diabetes amongst the disadvantaged and vulnerable.
