The Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF) is set to create a rapid post-graduate course in diabetology. The course will run in association with the American Diabetic Association from Friday, giving doctors access to information about the practical management of diabetes.

Courses of this nature are all too rare, particularly in several of the emerging diabetes hotspots around the world, including China and India . The president of the MDRF, V. Mohan, reported that over 32 million people have now been diagnosed with diabetes throughout India, according to 2000 figures. This figure, phenomenal as it is, will soar to 80 million by 2030, according to WHO (World Health Organisation) figures.

There are currently no formal degree courses in diabetology, despite the desperate need in India for doctors who know and understand diabetes. The course is planned for every two years, and is expected to have over 1,300 delegates. There will be lectures, symposiums, and the ability to meet with diabetes experts.
