Complications of diabetes cost billions

Thu, 12 Apr 2007
The healthcare costs of diabetes related complications account for billions of dollars in America alone. A recent report published by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE), paid for by drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline, confirms the expense.

The report, entitled ‘State of Diabetes Complications in America,’ indicates just how serious the problem has become. Amongst the major findings revealed by the report, the major influence of diabetes-related complications becomes apparent.

For instances, the cost of treating diabetes complications in the US alone soared to $22.9 billion in 2006. Three out of every five diabetics has at least one major health problem related to their disease. Apparently, the cost per patient per year is up to $10,000.

Type 2 diabetes complications include kidney disease, nerve damage, heart disease, stroke and eye damage.
