Erectile dysfunction and diabetes

Fri, 02 Feb 2007
Exercising regularly and eating an appropriate diet is essential for managing diabetes, but it could also have a dramatic influence on your sex life.

A recent study published in the American Journal of Medicine indicates that over 18 million American men aged 20 or over have been affected by erectile dysfunction, which refers to the ability to maintain or keep an erection .

According to the study, almost 90 per cent of those surveyed also had one risk factor for heart disease . These included diabetes, bad cholesterol, smoking and hypertension. Exercise amongst this group within one month previous to the study was categorised as unlikely.

Elizabeth Selvin, the author of the study, said: "This may be a powerful motivator for male patients who may be at risk for cardiovascular disease or who have diabetes. It's another reason to get off the couch and exercise and eat well."

The need for accurate and sensitive treatment for erectile dyfunction caused by diabetes has never been greater. Furthermore, despite recent reports that show the major ED drugs (viagra, cialis and levitra) can be used by diabetics, knowing when it is safe to prescribe is very important for healthcare professionals.
