According to a survey by the Healthcare Commission, the vast majority of National Health Service trusts in the UK are not providing diabetics with enough self-management and care at home advice and help.
The health watchdog said that basic healthcare practices were fine, and included annual check-ups for diabetic patients. However, of the 150 NHS trusts, as many as 130 were failing on home support, the HC said.
Self-management is often seen as the key to successful prevention of diabetes complications. Methods for this include help with weight management and planning exercise regimes.
A significant percentage of NHS total spend is accounted for by diabetics . Complications include amputation, kidney failure, heart disease and retinopathy. Self-care and support was the key, the HC concluded, backed up by expert opinion.
