Major diabetes problem in Cyprus

Tue, 05 Jun 2007
Diabetes is extremely prevalent in Europe, and Cyprus is one of the most seriously affected. According to recent statistics presented at a scientific symposium on diabetes, as many as one third of the population of Cyprus could be at risk of developing insulin resistance.

The Cyprus Diabetes Association presented the findings, in co-operation with the Greece National Centre for Diabetes and the Larnaca Medical Association. Up to 10.3 per cent of the population of Cyprus were estimated to be suffering from diabetes.

In Cyprus, one expert pointed out, the problem lies in people deserting the Mediterranean diet that has kept them healthy for centuries. Large portions and an unhealthy lifestyle were also to blame. One professor called for health education to be taught in schools.
