Both forms of diabetes linked to hip fracture

Tue, 04 Sep 2007
Both men and women facing either type 1 or type 2 diabetes could be more likely than the general population to face a fractured hip. The conclusion was drawn from a meta-analysis report published in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

A variety of different studies have been published on the subject before, linking diabetes with fracture, but conclusions were previously inconsistent. A number of contradictory results have been produced, and the trend was only established through meta-analysis.

Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes were found to be directly related to an increased risk of low-trauma hip fracture. The head researcher, Dr. Jangorbani, reportedly commented: "Results were consistent between studies of men and women and between studies conducted in the United States and Europe ."
