Combination of exercise to fight diabetes

Tue, 18 Sep 2007
One associate professor of medicine and cardiac sciences at the University of Calgary in Canada, Dr. Ronald Sigal, has headed up a team of researchers looking into diabetes and exercise .

The study, which is published in the September issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine, breaks new ground because it links diabetes progress to a combined exercise routine involving both aerobic and resistance exercise.

The team assessed a group of over 250 adults using a variety of different exercise methods, both combined and alone. They evaluated any changes in A1c values, and found that blood sugar control improved amongst those who did both aerobic and resistance exercise routines.

Sigal concluded: "There is additional value to doing both resistance and aerobic exercise." Greater education about diabetes and exercise could save lives.
