Diabetes linked to crash

A serious and fatal accident in Edmonton, Alberta, was likely triggered by diabetes . The driver of a semi-tractor trailer that went the wrong way down the highway before crashing was suffering from diabetes .

The man, Mark Santos, was a 25-year old insulin-dependent diabetic . His history included several hypoglycaemic episodes, and it is suspected that the influence of one of these may have caused the crash.

Santos, who died in the accident, may have found his low blood sugar levels influenced his judgement and left him confused or perhaps even unconscious. No other drivers were seriously injured in the incident.

Diabetes and other illnesses such as epilepsy can have an influence on people operating heavy machinery. In Alberta, where this crash happened, the onus in on the individual to manage their disease .
