According to a recent survey by the Royal College of Nursing, some of the most specialised and highly skilled nurses in the NHS, including diabetes nurses, are in fear of their jobs .
The RCN polled some 330 specialist nurses, many of whom have lots of experience, and found that almost 20 per cent were worried about redundancy . Specialist include diabetic nurses and nurses for Parkinsons disease .
Specialist nurses can make an enormous difference to the lives of individual patients, and top nursing officials were shocked by the findings, particularly when the NHS reportedly has a surplus.
The nurses’ union were quick to make it clear that cutting the 40,000 strong workforce would be a serious error. Financially, training a nurse costs thousands of pounds. Specialist nurses work both in the community and in hospitals, and many get involved in treatment, assessment, diagnosis and referral.
