An epidemic of obesity and type 2 diabetes in Australia is costing the health service dear. According to recent reports, some 17 per cent of Australians are now obese, and obesity costs the nation around $58 billion per annum.
A report by Access Economics indicates that obesity could affect 4.5 million Australians by 2025. As a result, over 200,000 people in Australia now have type 2 diabetes, a figure that has soared by 137 per cent over the last two year period.
Obesity is a major problem faced by both developing and developed countries throughout the world. With the next decade predicted to see soaring obesity levels, type 2 diabetes is likely to increase alongside. Diabetes often causes diabetes complications, further increasing medical costs.
